25 years ago, some interesting results

Here are the first round results for the girls 18s and 16s from the Life of Virginia Juniors in Richmond on Mar. 4, 1979. See how many names you recognize.

18's
Mary Lou Piatek d. Margie Waters 6-1 6-1
Louise Allen d. Kathy Barton 7-5 6-1
Patti Schiff d. Johnna Chaffin 6-3 4-6 6-2
Tina Bourgas d. Pilar Vasquez 6-4 6-0
Sherri Sime d. Sandra Beddingfield 6-2 6-0
Stephanie Fess d. Vicki Ellis 6-4 6-4
Kathleen Cummings d. Leslie Hewett 6-2 6-2
Cecilia Fernandez d. Diane Sawyer (!) 6-1 6-3

16's
Katherine Kell d. Cathy Richman 6-1 6-1
Genevieve Greiwe d. Cheryl Jones 6-4 6-3
Jane Jarosz d. Michelle DePalmer 6-0 6-7 6-3
Zina Garrison d. Joy Cummings 1-6 7-6 7-6
Elisa Fernandez d. Penny Barg 6-1 3-6 6-1
Leanne Seward d. Elizabeth Evans 6-4 6-4
Gay Nutter* d. Stacy Moss 6-2 6-2
Susan Mascarin d. Kate Gompert 6-4 6-2

*- I swear I did not make this name up. But it is another entry in our humorous names file.

And basic math tells us that the Diane Sawyer above is not the famous news anchor.

Those are the ones I heard of later, when they were professionals

Mary Lou Piatek
Louise Allen
Pilar Vasquez
Kathleen Cummings
Cecilia Fernandez d. Diane Sawyer (!) 6-1 6-3
Katherine Kell
Zina Garrison
Susan Mascarin d. Kate Gompert 6-4 6-2

10 out of 32, not too bad. And I'm not even American (thank god).

The following all had what I would call successful pro careers, meaning they competed regularly in Grand Slam and WTA tournaments for the most part. Obviously, Garrison was the class of this pack, but Piatek and Gompert cracked the top 20:

Piatek, who is now Mary Lou Daniels.
Louise Allen
Pilar Vasquez
Kathleen Cummings
Cecilia Fernandez (only minor success)
Katherine Kell or Keil
Jane Jarosz (minor, minor success)
Zina Garrison
Elisa Fernandez (minor, minor success)
Penny Barg -- later Penny Magers
Susan Mascarin
Kate Gompert (She cracked the top 20, had a win over Chris Evert and seemed poised for a solid career until mononucleosis sidelined her for an entire year. She was never able to recover)

Piatek d. Fernandez in the 18's final. In the 16's, Mascarin d. Keil (whom they mistyped as "Kell" in the first round results). Keil defeated Garrison in the semis in a 3rd set tiebreak.
