1992 Wimbledon semi: Seles vs. Navratilova

I just watched that match again for the first time since I recorded it in 1992, and WOW! I have to say the passing shots that Monica Seles came up with against Martina were incredible. I always knew she was one of the best passers, but Martina didn't play that badly on the day, it's just that Seles came up with pass after incredible angled pass on the dead run with two hands! I'm looking forward to seeing her in action in 2004- who knows, maybe she'll actually play doubles and come up against Martina again- wouldn't that be fun?!?

There is nothing more beautiful than Evonne Goolagong in full flight moving across a tennis court.

I think it was because of Navratilova - that Monica developed such a great passing game. Navratilova was (is) always pressuring you at the net - and Monica and Martina played quite a few times, so Monica had to develop a good passing game to defeat Martina N (and she did more times then not).
Monica speaks of Martina N very highly, in fact she says that she enjoyed playing Martina N. - just because their game style was so different from one another.
That was a great match! I'll have to watch that again soon.

this is the match also where martina complained several times about monica's grunting, if i remember correctly. then she regretted what she had said, but it was too late. it destroyed the final in 92...

"Again, I don't think I missed my shots because I wasn't grunting...

...Steffi played some incredible tennis."- Monica Seles (1992)

But I digress- this was supposed to be a pro-Monica thread...

I can hardly remember this match .

Still, I guess it has to rank as Monica's best grass court victory.

Not bad beating Martina N at Wimbledon .

Martina's interview (with Andrea Jeager) afterward was very complimentary- admitting that she didn't play bad tennis and that Monica definitely beat her today, etc.

Maybe a little guilt about contributing to the grunt-o-meter originally started by Nathalie Tauziat in an earlier round?

Probably but hey she did apologise and it's all water under the bridge now.

After all, in the end, Monica won the match.

I haven't seen this match in ages. But yeah it was a very good match. Martina was frustrated, I remember.

so you expected monica to go into a press conference afterword and say that she (monica) deserved to win in but was prevented... front of a bunch of people who had ridiculed her and did everything in their power to make sure steffi won. umm yea. that would almost happen.
