Selecting Tennis Balls

Just a question.

I notice most tennis players select their first and second serve balls from 3 or 4 balls tossed to them by the ball kids.
I understand that fresher balls can mean more control and better bounces.

However, when either Venus or Serena play, at least 95% of the time they just play the next ball tossed to them. They also do not hold a second serve ball on their person. I have seen them many times play the same ball from a first serve miss or after a point if it happens to come back toward them.

These two players have 28 singles slam titles between them. Are the other players being picky about what ball to put in play of any REAL value? It seems that every other player does this ritual.

Please explain. Are the sisters just lucky being indifferent of what ball out of six is used on their serve?

Re: Selecting Tennis Balls

Some players (although not a lot recently) will use the same ball again and again if they hit an ace or service winner. Some won't use a ball again if they hit a double fault.

I think Venus and Serena just aren't as superstitious and just take whatever is thrown to them. I've even seen Serena use a double fault ball in a new point.

Thats one thing I've always liked about the sisters, they don't have the irrelevant superstitions so many players develop.

I have noticed also, hard not to when some players have 2-6 in hand or on racket and then drop them on the ground.

However, to answer your question, occasionally I think a ball isn't as fresh but mostly I think it's just another habit or superstition.

Re: Selecting Tennis Balls

Who remembers Patty Schnyder putting her ball in her under shorts so her opponent (Conchita I think) couldn't keep asking for the same ball she had just won a point with?

Rena- a tennis great! 22 at striking distance.

Re: Selecting Tennis Balls

Justine also took one ball and used it each time. Interesting that, since this fad came along, the three most successful players in the women's game have been among the few not to adopt it.
