A Dear friend posted this on another board...
Well, if Martina is out for the rest of the season, things could get really troubling for her. It looks like the predictions that she won't be a contender for retaking the #1 spot any time soon will come true. Bummer it has to be like this. I'd rather see her take her knocks on court.
But she has 1150 points to defend, virtually all of which she will now lose, putting her down under 4000 points.
Meanwhile, Jennifer has 227 points to defend, Venus has 205 and Lindsay has her win from Philly which will drop off (can't be defended because the season ends earlier). I'm not sure how many points that is but I am guessing in the vicinity of 260-300. She also has first round points from the Chase, for a total of around 350, let's say (can anyone be more exact?)
Lindsay plays Zurich next week, Jennifer plays Zurich and Luxemburg, Venus is scheduled for Linz. So they could be picking up more points there. In fact, it's probable.
Then comes Munich. Last year, Venus did not play the Chase and Lindsay and Jennifer both bombed out in the first round. That won't happen this year. I'm betting one of those three takes the title and the other two do well, so those will all be plus points. Each of these women is virtually certain- barring injury or withdrawal- to increase her point total from what it is now. And I think you can see where that leaves Martina.....
As for next year, I think her much-vaunted "consistency" will hurt her unless she seriously revamps her game. Because she reached a lot of semis and because she is not likely to do any better than that unless she does a major overhaul, she's likely to keep going DOWN in her point total. In fact, the early part of the year is loaded wih MORE pitfalls for her, because her three titles all came in the first two months, along with two of the three finals
Just the facts.
