Sweden risks winless tennis season

With only two weeks of tennis tournaments left this year Sweden faces the grim reality that it may post its first title-less year in 30 years at ATP or WTA level

Just three years ago, in 2000, Swedes ATP players won 11 titles, more than any other country that year. Magnus Norman alone won five tournaments.

That's what happens when all your top players are old and out of shape

Yeah.

Magnus Norman just had surgery.

Thomas Johansson is still struggling with knee and shoulder problems.

Thomas Enqvist has had boughts with injuries as well as a few headcase issues.

Jonas Bjorkman and Robin Soderling are currently the top-ranked Swedes and you can believe they won't let Stockholm pass them by without a fight.

Stockholm tournament field doesn't seem to be too strong, so it might happen there... but even though I think that either Enqvist or Jonas can have a good tournament there, winning it seems to be out of their reach

Personally, I'm holding out hope that my Finn Jarkko Nieminen can snap up his first title in Stockholm but I'll take a Swedish winner too

Sweden has had a poor season, yeah, but Björkman and co have still a lot to do at the Stockholm Open.

All the best to Justine Henin-Hardenne!!
