Red face Can a sports news company do any worse than that?

Schuettler, Grosjean advance to semifinals at Japan Open

(SportsTicker) October 3, 2003

This is the interesting part of the article :

Quote:
The 20-year-old Zheng has spent most of her career playing in ITF events, but she appeared in the quarterfinals at Auckland and Hobart in January. She is the first Chinese semifinalist on the circuit since Fang Li in Pattaya in 1998.
. "Most of her career" : her international tennis "career" started rather in 2002 because before that, she was only playing some Chinese tournaments (except Los Gatos in 2001). OK, that's a small detail but it gives a different view on the player.

. "She appeared in the quarterfinals at Auckland and Hobart in January."
Is it me or Jie was not even present at these tournaments . Where does this news company gets their info from .

. "She is the first Chinese semifinalist on the circuit since Fang Li in Pattaya in 1998."
As Luke had rightfully pointed out, YI Jing-Qian reached the SF in Tashkent 2000 .

They can.
Apparently, Patty Schnyder hit a return volley in Antwerp last year.

What? The tennis press make mistakes? The same people who can't correctly spell the name of a top 10 player who's been on the tour for 14 years? (And who labelled her as "unidentified" when a photo was taken of she and Hingis at a hockey game.) The same folks who can't tell the difference between a forehand and a backhand in photos? The same people who tell you a player "crushed" another player 7-5 6-4? The same people who told us about the "Russian" Daniela Hantuchova? (Or the "German" Katarina Srebotnik.)

Those people, make mistakes? Perish the thought. That would be like a professional tennis writer saying Riggs got only one serve and King got to use the doubles alleys.

Naw, too far fetched.

That's a nice one too .

The thing here is that the reporter manages to make two enormous errors and a slighter one in only two sentences .

I am used to press errors, but not so many in so few words. The "thickness" here is amazing
