Post Congratulations Jennifer. You are the new WTA #1. But...

how in the world did Jennifer Capriati beat Venus Williams to #1? Venus is clearly the best player in the world. She won 2 grand slams last year and this year. And she's not #1. What gives?

Cat :

Because the computer rolls results over 52 weeks, a player becomes #1 weeks or even months after it's obvious she is on top. After winning the French, Capriati was clearly #1 in the public's mind, just as Venus was last year.
No one performed better than Jen this year in the slams. She may not stay #1 long, but at least she's a legit #1!

As for Venus getting to #1-it's all in her hands. If she plays Linz and Munich she should have a shot at it this year. A better result than Capriati at the Aussie would also get her there. The bottom line is she has to play though.

Most of the points are inthe GS tournaments. Jenn won 2 and had 2 SF in 2001. Venus won 2, had i SF and 1 first round loss. That's about 400 points right there. Then there are bonus points. Jenn beat a #1 to win OZ. 200 points. Venus beat a #10 to win the USOpen. 86 points (I think). Add in Jennhas played about four more tournaments than Venus and there you have it.

Why can't people admit that Venus played 4 less tournaments than the 17 allowable? That is the reason jennifer got to number 1 first. Lindsay didn't win any slams and neither did Martina. It isn't just about slams.

Capriati has points from 17 tournaments, while venus has points from 13.

Serena only has points from 9!

yes Venus played less tournaments however Jen got to the semis of every slam and didn't lose in the first round of the French, that's a ton of points Venus lost out on.

Enough bitching already. They already changed the rules to help Venus get to #1, and she didn't capitalize. She'll probably get it in a couple of months anyhow.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

Well looks like nothing ever changes..been away from the boards since WTA's went down. and people are still beating issues in the ground. No buts about it, Jennifer deserves to be #1! I just wish Martina would have played the match. People act like it was a given that she would have beaten Lindsay(LMAO by the way!) This one fall is not the cause of Martina losing her #1 ranking. It is due to regularly getting whipped by the top players, and not winning grand slams.
CONGRATS JENNIFER!

Well, Venus had every oppurtunity to get there and didn't. Jen siezed the moment and did get there. So, Jennifer deserves to be there

Why can't people be happy that Jennifer is #1. Venus will definitely get there next year, maybe this year after the WTA Champs.

Mirjana Lucic : Australian Open doubles champ and back in Top 100

Jelena Jankovic : US Open finalist 2008 and World No. 1

Jennifer Capriati : 3 Grand Slams, Olympic Gold and World No.1

Hey Guys! Jennifer has played an amazing year, one that she has earned through hard work and dedication. Regardless if you accept Jennifer as the number one she is; and at this point in time no one else deserves to be in her place right now. Not only is she enjoying a great singles year, but is currently sitting inside the top 100 in doubles also. Jennifer is the number one, she deserves it, and should be praised for her heroic accomplishments.

Congrats to Jen!

She deserves to be no 1 after all she's done this year.

Now we have a legitimate no 1 and I think that no matter how she got it, it's deserved.

I doubt Hingis would have beaten Lindsay, so Go Jen!

I would have title the thread this:

Congratulations Jennifer. You are the new WTA #1. But...
how long are you going to stay there?

-------------------------------------------------
I wonder if anyone can answer that.

"Gee, Quinn... I hope that little foray of yours into Geekland just now is the result of heat exhaustion, and not an unpleasant side effect of all that tutoring. I mean, you're not turning into a brain, are you?" -- Sandi

At this moment its obvious that Venus is better then Jennifer.
Venus beat her the last couple times and she has won more tournaments recently, but Jennifer did great in the beginning and didnt had many points to defend like Venus who already won Wimbledon and the US open last year.

Honestly i dont think she will hold it that long, she isnt winning tournament anymore and has in the begin of 2002 much points too defend.
But well we just have to wait and see.
