Question 8/17/03 Money Leaders. Interesting...

Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I understand there are also 2 ranking systems in a year for the PGA Tour just like in the ATP. The Golf players are ranked based on their prize money (which I think is fair, since everyone earns their spots)....Looking at the WTA list this week, I think it is more reflective of the REAL rankings people have in mind. These are the top 16 SINGLES prize $$$ list so far:

1. Serena Williams USA $2,136,560
2. Justine Henin-Hardenne BEL $2,066,325
3. Kim Clijsters BEL $1,940,835
4. Venus Williams USA $885,744
5. Lindsay Davenport USA $813,955
6. Jennifer Capriati USA $653,585
7. Chanda Rubin USA $539,170
8. Amelie Mauresmo FRA $520,421
9. Ai Sugiyama JPN $376,424
10. Conchita Martinez ESP $344,875
11. Elena Dementieva RUS $342,371
12. Vera Zvonareva RUS $333,869
13. Nadia Petrova RUS $326,416
14. Daniela Hantuchova SVK $314,738
15. Meghann Shaugnessy USA $293,779
16. Jelena Dokic YUG $290,709

...........what do ya think?

I have always thought that prize money is the better indicator than ranking points, although it has to be only singles prize money, no doubles. Do these figures include doubles money?? If so then Justine will be No. 1

It seems that the top 3 is very close

The problem is that you don't have the 17 tournament limiter

lol, I think the LPGA gives too much money to its players. The top players don't make as much as their tennis counterparts but the average prizemoney is much higher

1 Annika Sorenstam $1,497,622
2 Grace Park $1,009,009
3 Se Ri Pak $960,958
4 Juli Inkster $953,502
5 Hee-Won Han $818,230
6 Lorena Ochoa $705,113
7 Rosie Jones $668,826
8 Patricia Meunier-Lebouc $654,572 7
9 Hilary Lunke $604,346
10 Rachel Teske $598,168
11 Angela Stanford $566,044
12 Beth Daniel $548,354
13 Lorie Kane $523,905
14 Karrie Webb $477,813
15 Cristie Kerr $455,759
16 Candie Kung $441,395

nope. these are what the players earned in singles, not the doubles. if doubles count, Kim would be #1 for all her great play with Sugiyama. I too agree thath the LPGA and Figure skating, they don't get paid enough lol!

i like this money leaders-rankings list

first of all, points do not corrospond to prizemoney,
a winner doesnt get twice as many points as finalist
but the prizemoney is a lot more than twice the finalist
second of all, it does not take into account
the quality points, so regardless the
opponents beat, it doesnt matter...

so dont take this too seriously

So would they start from 0 every year, or would last year's moscow, US Open and year end champs not count for anything?

We don't want xxx player ranked 40 to be the #1 for a week in january etc.

how far along are the women golfers in comparison to the wta tour? endorsements are exponentially higher for tennis girls, remember that. jelena dokic is very very very popular overseas and her ranking and prize money don't reflect that THIS YEAR. im not making a kournikova comparison, btw.

Good to see Conchi in the top ten.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

These amounts are inclusive of what players earned in doubles play as well.

I have always thought that they were good indicators of how well a player has done over the season. If you look at breakdowns you would see amounts for singles, doubles and the cumulative amount, but the totals DO include doubles!

Take care of your character. Reputation will sort itself.

I think this would be a very fair assessment of the current state of play. If people choose to play less than others that is there decision and say if the Williams sisters did play more you would see many more losses because the week in week out grind of the tour is so distasteful to them.
