Will Venus shut it down for the rest of the year?

Venus hasn't played since Wimbledon. She isn't playing New haven, and she might not play the US Open. In fact, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if she isn't in daily contact with the USTA, who wants to use her in advertising, but doesn't want (I hope) to defraud the public.

The reality is though, at #5 as it is, she has no need to play, from a ranking perspective. Even subtracting New Haven and US Open points, Venus has a 500+ point lead over the current #8, #9, #10. She;s going to make the field at L.A. even if she doesn't play til then, unless the US Open final is contested by two out of Myskina, Rubin, Hantuchova. (hey, it could happen.)

She's going to be ranked between #5 and #8 no matter what. In a GS, those are all the same seed.

Code:
01 (BEL) 6039 22 Kim Clijsters
02 (USA) 5995 11 Serena Williams
03 (BEL) 5307 20 Justine Henin-Hardenne
04 (USA) 3582 19 Lindsay Davenport
05 (USA) 3536 10 Venus Williams

         3240 09 Venus Williams (w/o New Haven)

06 (FRA) 2644 14 Amelie Mauresmo

         2508 08 Venus Williams (w/o US Open)

07 (USA) 2277 18 Jennifer Capriati

         2212 07 Venus Williams (w/o Tour Championships)

08 (RUS) 2039 25 Anastasia Myskina

09 (USA) 2032 18 Chanda Rubin
10 (SVK) 1949 24 Daniela Hantuchova
So she doesn't need the money, she doesn't need the ranking, and she doesn't need the aggravation. So if Venus can't play the US Open, do you think she'll call it a year?

I dont think so, becuase I think she DOES need the ranking, also if she does love the sport as much as she claims to I dont think she will take the rest of the year off unless she really needs to.

i'm not terribly optimistic that she'll play the open. she might be better off taking the rest of the year and let the abdominal strain fully heal.

She does need the ranking? How so. Is there a clause in her endorsement contracts that requires her to be at a certain rank? And if so what is that level? #5, #10?

Inasmuch as I would miss her dearly from the courts, I'd really prefer if she doesn't play and be fully healed for next year, than to try and "salvage" this year and make things worse. Playing because you love the sport is one thing, but playing when you are not ready is foolish.

I trust Venus and her advisers will make the right choice.

I hope she is better, she has had more rest than she/her doctors have said she'd need to recover. I want her to play the Open and keep that trophy in the family.

Graf's stirring 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 throttling of Hingis at the French Open final this June was perhaps the most emphatic parting shot the game has ever seen. "

I hope not. I suppose it's all about commitment to the tour/fans and injury. If she's fit enough to play, do we believe she's committed enough to still play lesser tournaments ?

I think so.

Of course, if she's still injured then there's no question really.

I'm thinking that the only reason she is even attempting to play the Open is because Serena is out. I'm sure she is still thinking in her head of all the vicious things saying about their withdrawing. If she isn't healed, she doesn't need to play.

I think its pretty naive to suggest the USTA isn't willing to defraud the public.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

Venus is playing the Open!
Her agent has already said she is looking forward to playing.
Venus will be there! Count on it!

I'm all for this.

I believe, IF Venus pulls out of the US Open, that she just take the rest of the year off, and let the injury heal completely.

She'll be out for over 6 months, which means, she might be entitled to a injury seed just as Lindsay got, not that would matter anyway.

GO VENUS, HEAL UP GIRL!!

If Venus is healthy, then I expect her to play more indoor tournaments then ever before. At least 4 of them before the year end championships. She hasn't played alot this year so she shouldn't pull out due to exhaustion, plus Venus likes to travel to Europe.

Venus is currently in 5th place in the "Race to LA", 800+ points ahead of #9 (Zvonareva). If she doesn't play again before LA, I could see #6, #7, and #8 passing her; one of Mauresmo/Capriati/Rubin would do it at the US Open (most likely). The others could do it indoors in Europe, and Zvonareva or Dementieva could do it with a good enough result at the US Open.

Now, if Davenport/Clijsters/Henin all reach the US Open semis, I'd think that would make Venus safe for LA.

If Venus were to sit out the rest of the year, she'd get an injury ranking, but wouldn't be able to use it for her seeding. The WTA would have to give her a special ranking for that, although I'd bet they would.

Venus is Lazy, she don't want to do nothing but lay around in her bed. That's what she said. I'm aghast by that statement. That tells me she's a 23 year old woman whose tired already. If that's the case "so be it"

I'd rather have the Fiery venus at the open than the mousy one. If her heart is not into it then she should get the out the way and let Serena wear the crown. Quite frankly, I'm sick of Venus. (even though I love her)
