Court Trivia!

When did Margaret Court record her final single's victory on the women's tour, and who did she beat in the final? Hint but not much of one. She beat Kerry Melville Reid 7-6, 6-2 in the quarterfinals and Betty Stove 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals. Court also won the doubles at this tournament, teaming with Stove to beat South Africans Linky Boshoff and Ilana Kloss 6-2, 6-4. I'll answer it tomorrow, or later today. (Also posted in Blast from the Past)

Also, her final tournament ever was just two months later at the Virginia Slims of Detroit in February 1977. Apparently she found out she was pregnant during this tournament so a second round win over Greer Stevens was followed by a Quarter-Final default to Francoise Durr.

Right again. Margaret beat Sue 6-2, 6-2. She was the mother of two children at the time. I always wondered why she opted not to play the Australian Open a few weeks later, the one where Kerry Reid beat Dianne Fromholtz for the title.

I wonder why too Jem. Maybe it came down to money, as the Slims circuit was going on at the same time.

More Court Trivia:

Anybody remember who she lost to in her last singles appearance at the Australian Open?

Rollo is headed there -- ever so slowly. It must be his age!

I'll offer up Martina Navratilova in the 1975 quarterfinals when Court was seeded No. 1. I'm fairly certain it was straight sets.

It was Martina, and Margaret Court had nothing but praise for the talented young Czech afterwards. I wish they had played more matches, but you know how that goes- I wish Graf and the Williams sisters played more, but when a torch is being passed, the players tend not to spend much time at the ceremony

You know, I was down in Australia earlier this year at the Open, and had the chance to speak with a bunch of Aussies about Margaret. Apparently, she is still making somewhat unpopular remarks about the lesbian influence in women's tennis, and the gays in society in general. I didn't have the balls to bring it up when I was fortunate enough to meet Madge briefly, but boy-oh-boy did I want to!

She directed some not so subtle comments at Maria Bueno and Darlene Hard. She didn't name names, but she said something like "two top women when I was coming up were lesbian" or something to that effect.

I don't agree with her bias, but lets face it-70% of the world feels her way.
