seems to be something about LA

in 1996 there were lots of Asians: Endo, Kijimuta, Wang, Yi, Park, Miyagi, Saeki, Basuki, Hiraki, Date, and Sugiyama (11)

I am sure there probably a few others around this high level as at that point there were quite a few Asian girls in the top 100. I also counted 17 Asian girls in the Tokyo Princess Cup tournament of 1994, but I wasn't sure if it was a tier 2 event back then, plus it didn't seem as surprising given it's an Asian event with Asian wildcards etc.

"Religion has actually convinced people that there is an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. Any if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

But he loves you."

7 Asian players in a Tier II of a WTA event is nothing when you compare it to the mid 90's, but it is an achievement in today's game.

Yeah, there were many Asian players competing in WTA events back in the mid 90's. I call that era the "silver age" of Asian Women's Tennis, because I'm hoping the "golden age" has yet to come.

yeah, good ole 90s for asian players...
one thing, the ranking system was different then... as Kimiko complained of the change...
many tournaments are held in the US or Europe...
it costs $$$ to travel for them...
esp, Kimiko didnt like much of travelling... she always played like min numbers of tournament... like 12-14... unlike Ai...
She is more outgoing and social type... she loves being in crowds...loves travelling.. she plays like 27 or 28 each year... so she could have more advantage to get better points!

so, now...
Japan, Indonesia, Korea, Thai, China has some top 100 players...
hope more to come from more different countries!!
