Televised tennis may make an appealing appetizer to your Thanksgiving Day dinner this year. CBS Sports plans to televise an eight-man exhibition event prior to its Thanksgiving Day NFL game in November.

According to a published report in the SportsBusiness Journal written by Daniel Kaplan, the tape-delayed broadcast will be a two-hour program featuring match play, comments from participating players and advice from coaches, who will be permitted to patrol the sidelines during the match and provide coaching to the players. The exhibition event, titled SuperSet tennis, offers one-set matches in a single-elimination format.

The exhibition will be played in Portland's Rose Garden several days before the Thanksgiving Day telecast, scheduled for 1:30-3:30 p.m. Eastern time. Australian promotions company Sports Equities, Ltd., plans to buy the two-hour television time from CBS for $500,000, Stephen Duval, Sports Equities founder and director, told Kaplan.

According to Duval, Pete Sampras has given a verbal commitment to compete though he has yet to officially sign on for the exhibition. Duval said former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, Todd Martin, Mark Philippoussis, James Blake and Jan-Michael Gambill are all planning to play in the event.

While Sports Equities is promoting SuperSet as a $250,000 winner-take-all event, Kaplan reports "Of course, behind the scenes Duval is paying $500,000 in appearance money."

The exhibition will air opposite the early Thanksgiving Day NFL game. CBS Sports director of programming Rob Correa told Kaplan the network agreed to air the event because the $500,000 fee guarantees a profit. Correa believes tennis attracts a different audience than football and that the unique format of this event will attract views.

"For one, it is going to be profitable for CBS. Secondly, there are a lot of people home watching TV, even though it's up against NFL football. And third, it is an interesting format with single elimination and one set," Correa told Kaplan.

Good to see tennis on TV...really it needs more coverage on national TV...Clijsters and Kournikova are supposed to be involved in this event as well somehow...you can read about it in the article in the Exhibition thread.

Where are the WTA players in this exhibition?

I hope none of these players complains about the length of the tennis season since they'll be playing yet another exo in the "off-season".
