How'd I come up with that?

There are 29 American and Russians in the top 100

01 USA Serena Williams
04 USA Venus Williams
05 USA Lindsay Davenport
07 USA Chanda Rubin
08 USA Jennifer Capriati
10 RUS Anastasia Myskina
15 RUS Elena Dementieva
16 RUS Vera Zvonareva
18 USA Monica Seles
20 USA Meghann Shaughnessy
22 RUS Elena Bovina
24 USA Lisa Raymond
27 USA Alexandra Stevenson
29 USA Laura Granville
30 RUS Nadia Petrova
32 RUS Elena Likhovtseva
34 RUS Svetlana Kuznetsova
37 RUS Tatiana Panova
39 USA Ashley Harkleroad
45 RUS Lina Krasnoroutskaya
46 USA Amy Frazier
61 RUS Dinara Safina
66 USA Jill Craybas
74 USA Sarah Taylor
76 RUS Anna Kournikova
82 USA Marissa Irvin
88 RUS Maria Sharapova
92 USA Ansley Cargill
95 RUS Evgenia Koulikovskaya

16 Americans

01 USA Serena Williams
04 USA Venus Williams
05 USA Lindsay Davenport
07 USA Chanda Rubin
08 USA Jennifer Capriati
18 USA Monica Seles
20 USA Meghann Shaughnessy
24 USA Lisa Raymond
27 USA Alexandra Stevenson
29 USA Laura Granville
39 USA Ashley Harkleroad
46 USA Amy Frazier
66 USA Jill Craybas
74 USA Sarah Taylor
82 USA Marissa Irvin
92 USA Ansley Cargill

12 Russians

10 RUS Anastasia Myskina
15 RUS Elena Dementieva
16 RUS Vera Zvonareva
22 RUS Elena Bovina
30 RUS Nadia Petrova
32 RUS Elena Likhovtseva
34 RUS Svetlana Kuznetsova
37 RUS Tatiana Panova
45 RUS Lina Krasnoroutskaya
61 RUS Dinara Safina
76 RUS Anna Kournikova
88 RUS Maria Sharapova
95 RUS Evgenia Koulikovskaya

If the top 13 Russians play the top 13 Americans ....
Code:
01 USA Serena Williams vs 10 RUS Anastasia Myskina
04 USA Venus Williams vs 15 RUS Elena Dementieva
05 USA Lindsay Davenport vs 16 RUS Vera Zvonareva
07 USA Chanda Rubin vs 22 RUS Elena Bovina
08 USA Jennifer Capriati vs 30 RUS Nadia Petrova
18 USA Monica Seles vs 32 RUS Elena Likhovtseva
20 USA Meghann Shaughnessy vs 34 RUS Svetlana Kuznetsova
24 USA Lisa Raymond vs 37 RUS Tatiana Panova
27 USA Alexandra Stevenson vs 45 RUS Lina Krasnoroutskaya
29 USA Laura Granville vs 61 RUS Dinara Safina
39 USA Ashley Harkleroad vs 76 RUS Anna Kournikova
46 USA Amy Frazier vs 88 RUS Maria Sharapova
66 USA Jill Craybas vs 95 RUS Evgenia Koulikovskaya

74 USA Sarah Taylor xx
82 USA Marissa Irvin xx
92 USA Ansley Cargill xx
... to me this is non-competitve.

The Americans have a much more experienced, higher ranked player in every match. The only Russians with a real chance to win are
Krasnoroutskaya, Safina and Sharapova. Throw in Petrova off her RG.

But suppose we drop the top three Americans.

01 USA Serena Williams xx
04 USA Venus Williams xx
05 USA Lindsay Davenport xx

Now it's
the 13 lowest ranked Russians in the top 100 vs
the 13 lowest ranked Americans in the top 100.

Much more interesting
Code:
07 USA Chanda Rubin vs 10 RUS Anastasia Myskina
08 USA Jennifer Capriati vs 15 RUS Elena Dementieva
18 USA Monica Seles vs 16 RUS Vera Zvonareva
20 USA Meghann Shaughnessy vs 22 RUS Elena Bovina
24 USA Lisa Raymond vs 30 RUS Nadia Petrova
27 USA Alexandra Stevenson vs 32 RUS Elena Likhovtseva
29 USA Laura Granville vs 34 RUS Svetlana Kuznetsova
39 USA Ashley Harkleroad vs 37 RUS Tatiana Panova
46 USA Amy Frazier vs 45 RUS Lina Krasnoroutskaya
66 USA Jill Craybas vs 61 RUS Dinara Safina
74 USA Sarah Taylor vs 76 RUS Anna Kournikova
82 USA Marissa Irvin vs 88 RUS Maria Sharapova
92 USA Ansley Cargill vs 95 RUS Evgenia Koulikovskaya

i believe some of the American players
start their career in NCAA.........
which proves to be not the right place
to start one........tennis wise anyways.....
while many Russians start their career in juniors,
maybe skipping college is not a bad idea.....
screw the education......
and younger.......
and for Russians.....it's interesting to see that

Looks like somewhere between 8-5 for the Russians to 7-6 for the Americans. But of course, you left the top 3 Americans out. If they were in, the US would win 9-4.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

Wouldn't bet on the Americans winning this time next year - let alone in 5 years?

Depends on a surface. On clay Russians would have a chance even against the best American team. On US hardcourts would not have much of a chance even against the second string.

Obviously depends how they play on the day particularly with players like alex and Elena B. Assumimg the russians are having a good day, not allowing for surfaces. I get 7-3 and 3 someone wiser can call. Panova would need to be healthy. Monica v Vera would be an excellent match if Monica's injury was significantly better but by that time Vera may be playing even better anyway.
