A bit of all right - or left
By JANINE SELF
MOSCOW miss Evgenia Koulikovskaya is the tennis player with NO backhand!
The Russian serves with her left hand then uses whichever one is most convenient - as long as she can hit a forehand.
Koulikovskaya, 22, discovered yesterday being ambidextrous does not necessarily pay on grass.
But after losing 7-5 6-1 to Indonesia's Angelique Widjaja in the first round, she insisted she can still be a winner with her unique style.
Koulikovskaya recalled: "When I started travelling when I was 14, it surprised a few people. Sometimes there are jokes in the locker room - but I don't think it's a disadvantage.
"I was seven when I started to play and there was one coach and 32 kids.
"We had to hit the ball 200 times against the wall then switch to backhand.
"But as I didn't know how to do that, I just switched hands instead!
"I could write with my left hand before I went to school - and at school they made me write with my right hand.
"Now I use a knife and cut with my right hand but I play golf left-handed.
"The only thing I can't do with my friends is play table-tennis, because I keep trying to switch hands and that's impossible because it's too fast!"
Koulikovskaya admits she did consider learning how to use her backhand when her boyfriend suggested it last year.
RIGHT ON ... now she hits it with her right
She added: "I just had no power and didn't know how to hold the racket.
"I always thought grass would be no good for me. It is on clay where I can really improve."
Koulikovskaya is even considering testing a revolutionary new racket with fork-handled grips.
She said: "It might help but it will still be a bit tough to volley.
"I think I will have to stick with what I know."
