Yes, in the course of some research, I stumbled upon a certain Richard Williams who ... won the US Open Singles in 1914 and 1916. Does anybody have any info on this Slam winner? Would he by any chance have any relation with the Williams sisters' dad?

interesting you say that, King Lindsay, when several of Richard's grandchildren are biracial.

back to the original post, that's really funny! I suppose a google search would yield the modern R.W.

you're right. tennis has an extremely racist history and any Black/minority players would have been shut out of the sport back then regardless of how talented they were. this is one reason why so many people have a problem with two Black sisters dominating the sport at this point in history. we've come a long way baby.

yes back then they were called former slaver owners or descendants of former slave owners. How in the world do you think that most black americans got their names? From the last names of their masters.

So, I guess, not that much info about that Richard Williams. Probably, he may have inspired the sisters' dad to pick up some tennis books and rackets and start his journey.
