Who against did the WTA players scored their first big win?

And then soon after that, they gradually became top players themselves.

The only one I can think of is Jelena beating Martina H. in Wimbledon.

anyone else? thanks.

when serena beat steffi in indianwells...

actually, when you think about it, a lot of great players started becoming great after losses

- when kim lost to serena in 99 us open

- when justine lost to lindsay in 99 rg

- when serena lost to martina in miami, i think in 98

- daniela lost to venus in ao in 02 and her run in zurich in 01

and a couple others...

Monica Seles d. Chris Evert 1989 Virginia Slims of Houston Final. Seles' only win in 3 tries against Chris.

Karolina Sprem d. Jelena Dokic 2003 Internationaux de Strasbourg. Finished runner up, ranking jumped 64 places.

As far as Serena... her win in IW against Steffi wasn't her first big win. She beat Seles 4.6 6.1 6.1 in Chicago and followed that up by beating Mary Pierce. She skinned 2 top 10ers that week.

was amanda c in the top 10 when kim beat her in wimbledon 99?

I know amanda c is not especially a grass wonder but still. it made people show that we would have a new star soon lol

No, she wasn't. I believe she was seeded 12th.

I gotta go with those who are saying Kim's breakthrough win was over Hingis at Indian Wells 2001.

her real breakthrough in my opinion was filderstadt 2000 that dropshot at 4:6 4:4 deuce against tauziat. she won leipzig afterwards and made the quarters of the masters and entered the top 2
