The crowd and Serena

The crowd may have been a little harsh on Serena, but consider the background.

Serena had bashed the French in general, insinuating they were cowards who preferred to stay home and make clothes rather than fight in wars. (To their credit, the French are still sort of wondering where those Iraqi weapons of mass destruction are.) Yes, Serena apologized, but it came late and probably did little good.

Secondly, Serena not only beat Mauresmo, but pretty much went over board with her tough girl, glare routine. That doesn't endear her to a lot of people. Yes, Serena is bigger and stronger than most of her opponents, but she often acts like a bully and that usually doesn't make you any friends.

Serena also continues to talk and act like she never loses and when she does lose, refuses to give any credit at all to the woman who beats her. They once again aired that interview on ESPN this morning in which she said every time she lost in the last two years, it wasn't because her opponent played great. It was because she played poorly.

It's always all about Serena.

Actually, way too much arrogance comes through with Serena. So, I am sure there were a lot of fans who wanted to see her taken down a peg or two.

Lastly, they booed over that handshake, which was just this side of poor sportsmanship.

Anyway, it is not the end of the world, but maybe Serena should try finding a little humility. It might do a little something for her. Crowds everywhere can't all be wrong and Serena right.

She's been on the tour a long time now. Its time to grow up and stop playing tough girl.
