Wertheim's SF Predictions: Serena & Kim

Don't think this has been posted yet.
Does anyone know what Pam's picks are?!

SI.com: How do you see Thursday's women's semifinals?

Wertheim: I could see the Serena Williams-Justine Henin-Hardenne match playing out a lot like Serena's romp over AmŽlie Mauresmo Tuesday. Henin-Hardenne, like Mauresmo, has been known to get a bit jangly nerved on big occasions, and this is definitely a big occasion. The crowd will undoubtedly be on the Belgian's side, but this doesn't seem to matter much to the defending champ. We learned that Tuesday. What we also learned is that Serena is all business, and while Henin-Hardenne won their last match, in Charleston, there is a big difference between playing a final on a lazy spring Sunday in South Carolina and playing in a Grand Slam semi.

SI.com: What about Kim Clijsters vs. Nadia Petrova. Is an upset a possibility?

Wertheim: Not really. Petrova is a fine player who is a lot better than her ranking indicates. She was injured and lost her injury-protected ranking, so the fact that she entered the tournament outside the top 50 is deceptive. That said, Clijsters is a more complete player, a harder ballstriker and she knows the draw gods smiled on her. She has a real opportunity to win her first Grand Slam, and I still she'll take care of business Thursday and give us the anticipated final between the top two seeds.

Okay let me repeat: Justine is much more competitive and flat out better than Mauresmo, and Petrova is good enough to hang with Kim.

He's definitely underestimating Justine/Nadia. Actually he always underestimates Justine.

So being Justine's fan makes you to think no one should have an opinion.
You know what Justine is not playing some kind of unseeded player here,
she is playing the world number one and a defending champion.
Had Henin been #1 and defending champion, would think of someone
winning even if she was playing subpar?

Nadia will need to be careful with her flat hard groundies.. if they are in then she may well prevail

I want Serena to win easily and Kim to have a fight on her hands..

Come on let it be. Although Justine Henin is not to be underestimated. Nor Petrova.

He might be right. But his arguments were pretty unconvincing. Is he one of those Americans who feels some need to back the American in any circumstances - as if the declaration of independence will burst into flames if a Belgian wins?
Amelie has known psychological problems fighting at the FO. She had given up the ghost on her serve before Serena had finished warming up - if that wasn't a psychological collapse, I don't know what was. Justine's year in contrast has been remarkably precisely because she has fought her way through tight matches and seems to have overcome any past problem. Serena looked excellent when she could win in the first two or three strokes but when Amelie took the fight to her (all of 5 minutes) Serena started to revert to the player that lost to Amelie and Justine this year. It depends on Justine staying with her and forcing her to play long enough into each point.
Kim should beat Nadia but a surprise wouldn't be that surprising.

It is peculiar how Wertheim systematically writes Nadia off. I don't think it's fair! She's had a TOUGH long road to the Semi's and she's still standing! You CAN'T discount that! I really like Kim, but I want Nadia to prove to everyone that she's a force! So even if she loses, I want her to lose in a 3-setter and not 1 & 1. Because then Wertheim would write her off completely and boast about it!

Petrova has really surprised me, therefore disregarding her upset victories in this slam is not wise.

Yep.....good to see Vee on the go.

I don't know why I bother to read his columns. He never gives Justine good comments. It's always Kim, Kim, Kim.

I agree with above petrovas taken out seles capriati vera, and she sefinately hits harder than Kim (or about the same) I think the difference in both matches will be which player attacks the net

I'm not at all surprised that Wertheim is giving Nadia little if any chance in her semi-final. This is the same man that when analyzing their quarter-final matchup, said Vera is currently a better player than Nadia is or ever will be! And he's basing this statement on...Nadia's far superior serve? Nadia's more powerful groundstrokes? Nadia's better net game? lol.

Of course, Kim is a more accomplished player than Nadia, and better overall, but now Wertheim is trying to convince us that Kim is a harder ballstriker than Nadia? Did he watch any of Nadia's match against Jennifer? I guess Nadia consistently serving around the 115 mile an hour range doesn't count as hard ballstriking.

Mind you, I still think Kim will beat Nadia, but let's give some credit where credit's due.
