Some (recent) history...

MOSCOW (AP) -- Russia's Nadia Petrova upset fifth-seeded Martina Hingis of Switzerland in straight sets Monday in the first round of the $2.119 million Kremlin Cup.

Petrova, ranked 169th in the world, spoiled the Swiss star's 22nd birthday, posting a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the world's 10th-ranked player in just 49 minutes.

The 20-year-old Russian, playing serve-and-volley, broke Hingis in the opening game but the Swiss -- who won here in 2000 and was the runner-up last year -- broke back in the fourth game to even the set 2-2. But Petrova, consistently trapping Hingis in the corners and forcing her to play from the baseline, broke her again in the fifth and seventh games of the first set to win in just 18 minutes.

"I had certain problems with my service today, while Nadia was serving pretty well, preventing me from catching the rhythm of the game," Hingis said.

In the second set, the Russian made two early breaks to go 3-0 before Hingis broke back in the fourth game and held her serve in the next one to keep her hopes alive.

Down love-40 on her serve in the seventh game, Hingis saved two break points but then netted an easy forehand to give Petrova a comfortable 5-2 lead.

"It was my first indoor tournament after the injury and definitely not my best day," said Hingis, who missed the major part of the season recovering from ankle surgery.

One of the matches I really feel troubled Martina's psycke...

Nadia was just really a tough one for an opener... maybe a preview of what she has achieved today...

Consistency is the key...
