What is wrong with the french crowd?

They drove me nuts in the match between Serena and Amélie. They didn't show the least respect for serena, booing her and almost never cheering for her.
Ofcourse Amélie is their favourite but do need to be disrespectful for the opponent? I don't think so...
Serena played amazing and they just have to except that fact

JUSTINE H-H: 39 WTA-titles and counting...!

Good luck to K-lina Sprem, Venus, Tati Golovin, Daniela, and Lena D

It really bothered me though. The whistles and booing...

The booing and the whistling does not affect only serena's side of the court, it also affects Amelie's. The crowd don't bother me and neither does it seem to bother serena. Serena is so proud that booing her only ignites her to want to prove you wrong.
Crowds are only just that - crowds. Serena cannot lose to the crowd, she can only lose to the other player. Go serena all the way to the title!

I really think the booing missed the effect the French crowd wanted, bc Serena became only more motivated and more focussed. Her game really impressed me today, she is at her best right now. I hope Justine finds the right answer ;-)

Yeah, it's a pity that they were booing. But at least they gave a big applause at the end of the match

Given the history of FO crowds I thought they were actually quite well behaved. Amelie didn't get any bad treatment (remember Mary) even though she gave Serena the match by not playing as well as she can or has been playing. Serena doesn't seem very popular with crowds at lots of tournaments (I seem to remember watching US crowds cheering Amelie over Serena when I watched them play in the USA) Allowing for how she had just battered the French player too, I wouldn't expect them to be rejoicing. Serena handled it brilliantly and will probably have to do so again in the next two rounds.

Uh think you were going overboard here. If anything, the crowd was subdued. But as far as the French crowds are concerned, where have you been?

They even boo their own so really this thread is pointless.

In all likeliehood, the small portion that booed were booing Mauresmo in any case. The French really dislike a subdued French loss, re: the Pierce effect.

Maybe I am overreacting here, because I know they are rough on anyone, but still...
I cannot understand why they act this way...

How can one expect a bunch of dress makers to appreciate the talents of a Nubian warrior?

But isn't Serena a dress maker also?

I don't either, I stopped even wondering about. The French are French.

Unfortunately, you must remember Key Biscayne when the crowds boo-ed some little french girl

It ain't that the "French are French", it's that assholes are assholes and they are all over the place.

no they didn't.

I didn't hear the crowd booing Serena. I heard some hooting and whistling over a few calls they wanted to go amelie's way, but that's it.
