Is Another Kounikova in the making
I remembered vividly in 1998 when Anna Kounikova beat Seles, Davenport and few top players to reach the final Nasdaq
in Miami. And during her interview before the final, because she
scheduled to meet Venus in that final, she said she was better
than Venus. But jounalists were not convinced and asked her
many times to explain what she means by that. Her response, because
I beat # 2 and other top ranked player but failed to realize that
Venus too beat Martina Hingis in the semi-final who happened to be
world #1. Venus defeated Kounikova and since then she has not
been herself even leaving her titleless and possibly a history maker
I am not saying Vera said anything like but the celebration among people
on this board and even the BBC sports jounalists disiption of the
event made some of us wonder as to why many people are so happy
about the loss.
My concern is beating Venus is not a big deal. Few players did and that
does not point to any measurement of their rise in tennis career.
But my question is, is this another Kounikova who shines one time
and falls apart the rest of her career?
