Wimbledon scrapping curtsey 'a shame', says Venus

Wimbledon scrapping curtsey 'a shame', says Venus
2003-05-31 15:39:29 GMT (Reuters)

By Ossian Shine

PARIS, May 31 (Reuters) - Former champion Venus Williams believes Wimbledon's decision to stop players curtseying to the royal box will dent the tradition of the event.

"I don't know why they did that," the American, champion in 2000 and 2001 said at Roland Garros on Saturday.

"I am disappointed. I think the best part about Wimbledon is the history and the tradition. That's so nice, the curtsey.

"I actually taught a few players to curtsey on the way up to the court, to the centre court.

"Some of the players have never played on centre before. I'd have to show them what to do."

Wimbledon said last month that players will be excused from making the gesture to members of the Royal Family and visiting dignitaries, apart from the Queen and Prince Charles.

The Queen has not attended the tournament since her Silver Jubilee year of 1977 when she presented the women's singles trophy to Briton Virginia Wade.

The move follows a request from All England Club President, the Duke of Kent, to cease the tradition in line with common practice elsewhere.

Last year Venus lost in the final to younger sister Serena, who is likely to remain the last player to perform the archaic gesture on tennis's most famous stage.

Men will no longer be requested to bow to the royal box.

I too like the tradition at Wimbledon, but some things are a bit overdone. But hey, Wimby will always be my fave Grand Slam.

I'm glad Venus said that because the hatefull times had them on the cover last month, saying 'they barly bent' down to the royals.

I think Venus should do it anyway... if she wants to create some headline news

"I told her, `You don't want to get into a hitting battle with Sharapova, because it would be uneven for Sharapova, because Sharapova only has one good side and that's her backhand,"'. "`You don't want to get into that for the simple reason you would win. So try to hit some balls to her strong side, to her backhand, and that would help you with your match for tomorrow

I'm amazed no W/S fan has suggested yet that everyone should curtesy to Serena.

I actually agree with Venus. It's a shame. I like it and I like the all-white clothes... though I think requiring the all while practice outfits is a bit much.

They'll still have the option to do it, right?

I personally hope everyone keeps it up because it's one of the many little things that makes Wimbledon special. It does seem unlikely though.......

I think they shouldn't get rid of it.

I mean, Wimbledon is all about TRADITION, and this curtseying is part of that tradition.

I like the tradition at Wimbledon, and I like the way each slam has it's own character etc, but the bowing/curtesying was just embarrassing. I'm surprised no-one ever refused to do it. I would have.

i dont get it

i dont understand, if a player is "excused" from cutseying, then isnt' that just saying its optional? Why can't a player just do it anyways out of their own good hearts. Cuz i remember seeing an article where they say if you curtsey, it would be rebellious and serena says she won't curtsey because she is afraid of losing her membership or something like that. Why the hell would wimbledon "outlaw" curtseying? Its somethign that all humans are entitled to do so isnt' that just taking away someone's free will?

hunger, desire, fire..........
stength, power, precision.........
talent, court sense, smartness........
no i am not talking about a racket or a squirrel, i am talking about the former and future number 1..............
martina hingis!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good Luck Justine Henin Hardenne, Venus Williams, Maria Sharapova, Mary Pierce, and any of my other favorites that I might have forgotten about at this moment.
