She soundly (or silently) lost to Steffi 6-2, 6-1.

There was a big hub-bub about her grunting. Tauziat bitched to chair umpire about it, Navratilova bitched to chair ump about it. So the English press created the "Grunt-o-Meter", and measured how many decibels Monica grunted. She supressed the grunt completely and lost soundly. Her father said it was the worst injustice to her career (until 93...) and that she may not have won but should of at least had the chance to play her game. She received 2 code warnings (1 in each QF/SF) matches for her grunting. That's so stupid and now certain players yelp like they're being attacked and it's not even considered.

in the semis against navratilova, she was grunting "too loud." the same "happened" against tauziat, but nobody really cared about that match, i guess. after all this, monica was warned that if her grunts exceeded a certain decibel, she would be cited for a code violation and lose the point. she didnt grunt in the final against steffi and doesnt have much to show for it. ppl are still angry not only bc it was monicas best shot at wimbledon (she didnt play in 91), but it was bc of the manner that she had to play in order to lose.

It actually was against the rules back then, I think. Then they realized it was a stupid rule, so they changed it, luckily for Serena.

Wasn't there also a bomb scare at Monicas hotel that year, or was it a different year, or it never happened I just dreamed it or something? That probably didn't help much (if it happened ).

it was not against the rules ever heard of jimmy connors?

the british media always looks for a victim. in 1990 steffi even had to ask for a press forbidding regarding any privat questions since they were totally stalking her

Well that is in very bad taste! That's like a witch hunt. Poor Monica, she should have grunted their ears off.

There was a bomb threat to her on Court 1 (I think). It was fake, obviously... But they called in dogs and took her away w/security guards. She endured so much that fortnight,...and still was just 1 away from the "real" Grand Slam.....aka the Seles Slam.

She still couldn't beat Graf on grass. Look at thier h2h, she's never beaten Steffi on a fast hardcourt, or grass.

"Hatred is the coward's revenge for being intimidated" - George Bernard Shaw

"And for the best of the teen-agers who followed her, and who occasionally referred to her as over the hill, Graf had a ready answer: against top-ranked Martina Hingis, Graf wound up 7-2. Graf's stirring 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 throttling of Hingis at the French Open final this June was perhaps the most emphatic parting shot the game has ever seen. "

It was against the rules for women, which is why it was such a stupid rule. I might be wrong, I was quite young then, but that was always my understanding. Although, I've just heard the thing about Father Christmas...

the thing is monica didn't get another real chance anymore (or didn't took it after 96). if she had won the title only once then nobody had talked about it anymore!

Maybe she would not have won anyway...but she should have been ALLOWED to play her game her way. Then we would have seen for sure.

I never heard about that, but if that's true then it's pure discrimination
