Round 3 Preview

Serena Williams vs Barbara Schett
Schett will be on her best to pose a real threat to Serena.
In her 2 first rounds, she was taken to 3 sets, and she's known for making too many errors.
Williams 6-1 6-3

Meghann Shaughnessy vs Ai Sugiyama
Sugiyama is playing some great tennis, Shaughnessy will still be a bit tired from her first round match against Kuznetsova, but she will need all the energy against Sugiyama who gets everything back.
Sugiyama 3-6 6-3 6-3

Ashley Harkleroad vs Magui Serna
Ashley has great potential, and the way she won that match against Daniela was amazing, but I think this will be the end of the road for her.
The 3-hour over thriller can't have been good for her injured arm and on top of that she plays the red hot Magui Serna, who knows her way around the gravel courts really well.
Serna 6-4 6-0

Fabiola Zuluaga vs Amelie Mauresmo
As much as I like Fabiola, I don't think she'll have even the slightest chance against Amelie's firepower.
Mauresmo 6-3 6-2

Justine Henin-Hardenne vs Dally Randriantefy
Never seen Dally play, but their last encounter went to Justine pretty easy, I'm hoping it will be the same this time.
Henin-Hardenne 6-1 7-5

Patty Schnyder vs Eleni Daniilidou
Tough match to predict, both have been playing quite well, but Patty has had 2 easy unexperienced opponents.
Still, I give the edge to the more experienced one of the two, especially on gravel.
Schnyder 1-6 7-5 6-2

Petra Mandula vs Flavia Pennetta
Mandula is a very on and off player, she can be quite good, but her hard flat strokes aren't that impressive on gravel, so I give the edge to the more solid Flavia Pennetta.
Pennetta 6-0 6-1

Laura Granville vs Chanda Rubin
Rubin's been playing very well, maybe a possible comeback for her?
Laura has troubles in the first round, but cruised past experienced Iva Majoli.
I'm hoping and thinking Chanda will pull it off in 2 tight sets.
Rubin 6-4 6-4

-----------------------------------------------------------

Jennifer Capriati vs Julia Vakulenko
Easy win for Jennifer.
Julia's posted some good results, but red hot Jennifer will be her road block.
Capriati 6-2 6-3

Marissa Irvin vs Nadia Petrova
Petrova is probably playing some of the best tennis in her career, and I think she can get very far in this tournament, maybe even past Jennifer.
As much as I love Marissa, I have to stay real and say Nadia in 2.
Petrova 6-2 6-2

Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo vs Vera Zvonareva
Sanchez Lorenzo is on a streak, but Vera is always a tough competitor because she gets so many balls back and can be aggressive as well.
My pick is Zvonareva because I think Maria will be a bit tired.
Zvonareva 7-6 6-3

Sylvia Farina Elia vs Venus Williams
Upset in the making!
Venus has been playing terrible, while Sylvia looks like she's been playing more aggressive than ever, she's really working on her game.
I think Sylvia will pull this one out by letting Venus make the errors.
Farina Elia 6-2 5-7 6-3

Davenport vs Dechy
I was really impressed with Dechy vs Leon Garcia, she's been hitting harder than ever also, and on top of that she's really consistent.
Lindsay was a bit dissapointing against Tulyaganova, she wasn't moving towards every ball, Tulyaganova hit more winners than her, and she made too many errors.
Dechy 6-2 7-6

Conchita Martinez vs Tina Pisnik
Conchita , experienced as she is on the red clay, will outlast and confuse Tina without too much trouble.
Good tournament for Tina whatsoever.
Martinez 6-3 7-5

Magdalena Maleeva vs Rita Grande
Will be a long match with long tiring rallies, but out of these 2 backboards, I strongly believe that Maleeva is the most talented one.
Maleeva 6-3 7-5

Paola Suarez vs Kim Clijsters
Suarez is so much better on gravel than on any other surface, but she can't handle the pace Clijsters will give her.
It won't be a total blow-out.
Clijsters 6-3 6-3

Agree with your assessment of Sugiyama-Shaughnessy. Ai has been a lot more impressive than Meghann this clay season, just think of her run in Rome when it took Clijsters to stop her. She's in vintage form.

In her post-match interview today, Davenport didn't remember ever having played Dechy before. I found that a bit unlikely considering the time they have both spent on Tour. And they have met twice (one at the Australian Open) in the late 90's. Lindsay won both, but that's nothing to go by for this meeting. Dechy has a much better chance this time, but I don't quite think it will be enough. Lindsay upped her game substantially against Tuly when she needed to. She can do that again.

Farina-Elia beating Venus? Nah, don't think so. Venus has always owned her. But maybe Silvia can take a set like Dominikovic did, only to get run down in the third.

Daniilidou - I have a feeling she will take care of Schnyder. But I'm not willing to bet any money on it.

Venus will only get better with more match practice. So the upset there is very unlikely. The same goes for Davenport. I agree with the rest of the your analysis.

I think Meghann is a smart player, and having been pushed in Round 1 will come out sharp. A tough match to predict though.
Shaughnessy 7-5 6-3

This is where I expect Patty to come unstuck. It will be a tough fight, as you predict, but I think Eleni is tougher mentally.

I like Grande's play and I think she has more variety. Maggie will play more aggressively, but in a 3-set situation, I'd give the edge to Grande.
Grande 2-6 6-3 7-5

Venus won't lose to Farina Elia. Farina found her groove in Strasbourg but she had a hard time to defend. Venus is better at all levels. this might go to 3 sets only if Venus doen't win the 1st set!

I also believe that Dechy has nothing to hurt Davenport ... even on clay. For some reason Davenport has had always problems with Tulyaganova but when she needed to step it up, she did ... Davenport will get her pass to the R16 with a straight sets victory.

Odd how you root against Venus, and you have her lose. Venus, Lindsay should win.

Am I the only one who thinks Ashley has a good chance against Serna? I wouldn't be surprised to see Ashley win this in straight sets actually...
