Mauresmo cruises into last 16

Wednesday's WTA Tour round-up

Mauresmo was runner-up in Rome in 2000 and 2001
Fourth seed Amelie Mauresmo cruised into the last 16 of the Rome event with a 6-2 7-6 win over Russia's Lina Krasnoroutskaya.

The Frenchwoman, a two-time runner-up in Rome, proved too strong for her 19-year-old opponent in a one-sided first set.

But Krasnoroutskaya, who beat Monica Seles on her way to the Doha semi-finals this year, lifted her game in the second set, racing to a 4-2 lead in the tie-break.

But Mauresmo forced her way back into the match and Krasnoroutskaya's weak backhand into the net brought an end to the contest.

Mauresmo now faces a third-round clash with the winner of Wednesday's match between 16th seed Anna Pistolesi and Flavia Pennetta.

Jennifer Capriati also advanced to the third round after she defeated Fabiola Zuluaga 6-3 6-4.

The fifth seed had no problems wrapping up the first set but had to fight back from 2-0 and 0-40 down in the second to draw level with the Colombian.

Capriati, who is determined to continue her solid warm-up for the French Open, eventually overcame Zuluaga with her powerful groundstrokes.

The American now meets unseeded Nadia Petrova, who progressed when her opponent Monica Seles was forced to retire.

The 10th seed had already lost the first set to the Russian and was 4-1 down in the second when a foot injury flared up again causing her to abandon the match.

In Wednesday's other matches, Russia's Svetlana Kuznetsova upset 12th seed Eleni Daniilidou of Greece 6-3 6-2 and 17th seed Patty Schnyder of Switzerland swept aside Austria's Barbara Schett 6-0 6-2.

Kim Clijsters will play her second-round match later on Wednesday.
