To boost tennis popularity worldwide....

What has to be done for tennis to become more popular world wide?
Tennis is definitely one of the most globally played and popular sports but still far behind football and there's a lot of room to be improved so more people around the world will play and watch the sport.
It's not just about the professional tours but it has to start from the grass roots level like lowering the costs of the equipment and better accessibility. Compared to football, the opporutnities to play tennis for average people are quite limited.. There are many people who haven't even hit a ball with a tennis racquet so they don't have a clue how much fun playing the sport is. Plus it takes so much time to pick up necessary skills to enjoy tennis compared to some other sports like basketball and football. There must be a lot of good ideas to boost tennis popularity at every different level.

Well, one idea may be to cater more to the actual fans of tennis. There are diehard fans who love the game for the games sake and not just the players. Rivalries should be appreciated and brought to the forefront. Then again, we may have to start with posters like yourself who say, "I would rather anyone win but a Williams sister."

Statements like that very well could chip at the popularity of this sport.

(Thanks for starting this thread, by the way).

I don't mind straight people as long as they act gay in public!

Women's Tennis happens to be the most recognized sport for women (can anyone here think of any Women's sporting event that can be as popular as this outside any Olympic event?). They should somehow build on that.

As for tennis in general... make it more accessible on TV. Thats why tennis is not that popular in a lot of countries: because no one gets to actually watch it.

I say raffle off dates to boys 16 and under at tournaments. This will give them thrills they will never forget, plus send them well on their way to becoming the we all knew they'd become anyway. The boys win, the players win (if they manage to find their next boyfriend or husband this way) and, most importantly, tennis wins.

The WTAworld Quote Hall of Fame (recent entries):
"All this year Kim has been have catwalk draws ..." - leslie, on Kim Clijsters' easy draws in 2003
"I wanna see Anna, I bet I could tape that ass" - SerenaSlam, on fan perception of Anna K.
"n I am more of a retard, yes." - gogomaggie
"she has a face of a cereal killer" - Naldo, on Serena Williams

"I said 15 years ago they should blow it up and start over. I still feel that way." - Martina Navratilova

Too many damn chiefs. ITF, WTA, ATP, various national bodies, individual tour directors, IMG, Octagon, four differing sets of slam visions and ambitions ... the list goes on with new wannabees entering the fray with their own agendas.

Unlike football with FIFA, or its bastard's bastard child the NFL there is no central management. All the parties above jealously guard their individual interest while the game as a whole goes abegging.
