Wollongong to host fed cup: Australia v Colombia

Great news for me ! I really enjoyed last year's event and am gonna go get my tix asap. Alicia played terrific on the surface last year and im expecting her to do the same now that shes having her best year to date. ... who else is going?

May 12 Wollongong to host tie

Wollongong, NSW, will host the upcoming Fed Cup Qualifying Tie against Colombia (July 19-20), Tennis Australia President Geoff Pollard announced today.

The Optus Australian Fed Cup Team will return to Wollongong's WIN Entertainment Centre, the site of their victory last year against The Netherlands, to this time battle Colombia for the chance to remain in the elite 16-nation Fed Cup World Group.

"After the fantastic crowd support and great atmosphere produced at last year's Qualifying Tie, I know Fed Cup Captain Evonne Goolagong Cawley and the team are looking forward to returning to Wollongong to once again play in front of such a vocal home crowd," Pollard said.

"Last year Wollongong was the scene of one of Australia's biggest crowds in recent times for a home Fed Cup Tie and one we hope will be repeated in just over two months when we take on Colombia."

The Fed Cup Tie will be played indoors on plexipave hardcourt. This is the first time the two countries have met before in Fed Cup history.

Meanwhile, the venue for the Davis Cup Semifinal tie against Switzerland is still to be determined. Australia is also hosting this tie and an announcement regarding the location is expected in the next 48 hours

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

Who will Colimbia select?
#176 ZULUAGA, FABIOLA
#2 592 FARAH, ROMY
#3 905 CASTANO, CATALINA

Fabiola is playing very well on the clay having beat Hantuchova so she is the only hurdle IMO for the aussies to overcome. Im thinking theyll play Catalina in singles too even tho shes ranked in the 900s, cos she used to be much higher
?

Good luck to the Aussie and Balkan girls!

900? She is ranked about 220...hehe (whoever provided that obviously has their numbers mixed up )

That will be the team I guess. I don't understand why they didnt go with grass Fabiola is more than capable on hardcourts.....

What do you think the aussie team will look like? maybe if we do v.well and seal the tie they might give Wheeler a run? i saw her beat alicia n a practice session at last years fed cup and would be nice to see someone new play!

I'm pretty sure Evonne will stick with the team that went to Spain...Alicia, Nicole, Sam and Rennae. Who knows, maybe if Christina does better than Sam at the next 2 slams, she might get her spot

Don't think Evie will get a run, unless she does very well at RG and Wimby (and winning just one round wont do, she'll have to do better than that to win back Evonne's faith in her). For her sake I hope she does

I know, great win

Perhaps she will be invited as a hitting partner? That's a likely scenario, but it's far too early for her to be selected on the actual team.
