Anastasia Myskina in 2003

Nastya's 2002 was great. She went from No.59 in the world to No.11, and had wins over the likes of Clijsters, Henin-Hardenne, Hingis, Dokic, and Hantuchova. This year, she's broken into the top 10 a few times, added her 3rd and 4th titles to her resume, and made a Grand Slam quarter-final. But it's pretty obvious she hasn't played as well in 2003. Is she slumping, or has she merely hit a plateau?

I think she has hit a plateau. When you look at the top ten, every player has a weapon that stands out, but I cant see a strong enough weapon in Nastya. She has a great backhand and is a very speedy player but others in the top ten beat her in categories as well.
But, she is still very young and can improve these things. She mostly has to improve her physical strength and her serve.
And hey James,

My MSN is screwed up man. It says I dont exist (again). The second time in the last like 4 months . When I have time, I will make a new addy and then have to add all my contacts again . Pain in the ass.

Nastya is OK.. She'll be in Top 10 between Roland Garros and the end of the year..

Loss to Vera is nothing. First Vera is hot. Vera was playing clay to prepare to Berlin, while Nastya had to play carpet. Expect her to make at least quarters at Rome.

She really loses to players she shouldn`t lose too. And she doesn`t perform wel enough in the major tournies!? also she doesn`t have any weapon i think against the power play.. she seems to just smack it flat!?

i don't see what the problem is here. She had a pretty decent start to the year. I hate how people just go nuts over one loss. So she lost her match to Vera 6-1 6-2. That is not indicative of a loss of form, necessarily. Maybe she had one bad day. maybe she was tired. maybe she just didn't feel like tennis that day. Maybe she was hurting. Who knows? Call me when she loses a string of matches like that, and then we'll all debate whether she's slumping or not. Personally, I think she's playing as well these past four months as she ever has.

Losses this year (according to yahoo, who are wrong a lot i've noticed):

Bovina
Clijsters
Henin-Hardenne
Sarah Taylor
Pierce
Zvonareva

Good wins:
Rubin
Dementieva
Dechy

Its not really anything to be writing home about, but I guess its consistent. Being able to stay focussed for the week to win two tournaments no matter what the quality of the draw is is a good sign. And despite being a tier 4, Sarasota was loaded with players ranked high.

But, in the big tournaments, she's only had 1 good result, being the QF at the Aussie. In tier 1 and tier 2 events, she's got 4 first match losses, and one QF at Dubai. That will need to change.

Ana M has always been inconsistant so to me there is no shock defeat. I mean to get to Eastborne final and loose as dismally as she did? Anyway I think she will still be in the top 20 by the end of the year. However I am suprised she is not coming to BMH again as she has mnay points to defend
