guess this isn't how the system works, it's been changed slightly, as men and women ahve different systems.
4 automatic wc's for Brits
4 players then go into a play-off for ONE wild card.
3 are given out at AELTC's discretion, this includes the Aussie one.
Men have the 8 playing for 2 , one of whom must be a junior.
I spoke to Helen Crook shortly after this was announced and she is delighted. As at least you're getting the chance to play-off for one. There are several concerns though:
when is it played? This could majorly f**k-up Birmingham and Eastbourne wc's.
Is there still pre-qualifying? The 3 players who dont come through the play-offs were good enough to be 'selected' for play-off, yet could end up with nothing if its held the same week.
AELTC decides 4 automatic places, 4 play-off players and 3 others, but all names are put forward by LTA for them to consider.
Therefore i'd expect:
to recieve automatic spots.
to find themselves in the pool, preferably with Helen coming through and Sarah getting an extra wc into main draw. Julie plays qualies on her won rank which lets another player in.
to get the other ones.
Also, the men's statemtn on teh 'top 350' has been retracted, partially coz they dont have enough players in the top 350 to make it a choice!!
Also, expect the older players to get an equal shot, as Felgate has insisted frequently that without the likes of Crook, Ahl, Pullin, Parmar etc... they younger players have nothing to aim at. Patrice just thought they were all a waste of space, when without the over 25's we'd have 6 players in top 500 and not 10!!
