Hall of Fame thoughts

This is from Wertheim last week, on who gets into tennis Hall of Fame.

His Criteria

* Active players (or Martina Hingis and Pete Sampras)

* Voting is on career accomplishments to date

As Wertheim himself wrote I'm betting that Clijsters, for instance, eventually gains the requisite credentials, but if she quit playing tomorrow, she wouldn't make it.

Remember this is Wertheim's list, so no questions about WHY so-and-so's on it. I have no idea. But he did pick only multiple GS winners.

No-brainers
-----------
Martina Navratilova (Well she IS active)
Monica Seles
Serena Williams
Venus Williams
Martina Hingis

Good chance
-------------
Lindsay Davenport
Jennifer Capriati

Borderliners
-----------
Mary Pierce

I think his list is accurate in terms of reality.
My own personal list would be a bit harsher.

No-brainers
-----------
Martina Navratilova (Well she IS active)
Monica Seles
Serena Williams (The 'Grand' Slam put her over the top)

Good chance
------------
Martina Hingis

Borderliners
------------
Venus Williams

NOTE: I make Martina is 'good chance' while Venus is 'borderline', because of the extra GS title, and winning a GS titlwe in at least three years, rather than two.

I agree with your assessment, Volcana. If Venus were to quit tennis today, she would be remembered as someone who wasted her talent and was on the scene only for a moment. Her multiple Slam wins and #1 status would indeed make her borderline.

If Venus were to quit tennis today she still will be in the hall of Fame.

I think Venus would make it. Her appeal would go beyond the 4 GS singles titles.

She is the first African American woman ranked number 1 on the WTA computer. Her game and name transcended tennis.

Her credentials would get her in, IMO.

Hingis would be a lock too. The youngest GS champion in the open era will make it.

Thanks for this discussion, Volcana.

I think Venus would make it, 4 singles GS, 8 doubles GS, plus #1. She would make it.

As for Mary on the original list, I highly doubt she's gonna make it.

At the moment, I think that Hingis has as much right to be up there as Serena. Not only has she won the same number of slams but she reached six other grand slam finals and was no.1 for ages. That will obviously change as Serena wins more titles but for the time being - she was every bit as dominant a player in 1997 as Serena is now, if not even more.

I think Wertheim is right about who WILL make it. I think 4 GS singles titles, Olympic Gold, and a tea break at #1 is borderline.

Among Open-Era players, I wouldn't consider anyone a 'shoe-in' unless they had as many GS singles titles as Evonne Goolagong.

I think being #1 makes you a shoe-in no matter what. Imagine a #1 player not making it in, that's just outrageous.

Venus is in the Hall of Fame already... If she quits today, she will make it because she is Venus. Though I'm not sure what the hell she has been doing the last year, losing to her big ass sister in all those slam finals.. She better get her stinking act togather before she drops to #4....

"I told her, `You don't want to get into a hitting battle with Sharapova, because it would be uneven for Sharapova, because Sharapova only has one good side and that's her backhand,"'. "`You don't want to get into that for the simple reason you would win. So try to hit some balls to her strong side, to her backhand, and that would help you with your match for tomorrow

Since so few people have actually made it to the #1 ranking, that alone will get you into the HOF.

Venus, Hingis, Davenport, Capriati, Serena, Seles right now are all shoo-ins. Add in the fact that they have all won mulitple slams only adds.

Sanchez-Vicario will also be in there when her time period is up [you have to be retired 3 or 4 years before you are entered].
