AMELIA ISLAND -- With a high-five at mid-court, Lindsay Davenport and Lisa Raymond sealed their Bausch & Lomb Championships doubles final victory yesterday, a 7-5, 6-2 win against the top-seeded team of Virginia Ruano-Pascual and Paola Suarez.

Winning the doubles title took a little bit of the sting out of Davenport's earlier loss to Elena Dementieva in the singles final, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.

"I wasn't disappointed at all to go back out there," Davenport said. "It's great to end the week on a happy note. And even though I didn't win [the singles championship], I think I made great strides in the quality of my tennis this week."

Raymond watched the first two sets of her partner's match against Dementieva from a courtside seat, then decided to return to the player's lounge to watch the final set on TV.

"I figured one of us had to have some energy left for this match," Raymond said with a laugh.

Davenport and Raymond fell behind 0-3, then used sharply-angled volleys and well-placed passing shots to pull to 4-4. Bausch and Lomb Championships Finals

"At 0-3, we had a bunch of points to go 0-4," Davenport said. "That was the key game for us."

Raymond and Davenport settled in from there, dictating play and closing out the first set, 7-5.

Ruano Pascual and Suarez held serve to open the second set, but despite outbursts in Spanish and changing service formations, they could not shake the steady play of Davenport and Raymond, who won the next five games.

"It's not often that you get to play with your best friend and someone like Linds that can definitely carry her partner," Raymond said. "When I used to play with Rennae [Stubbs], I felt like I had a lot more pressure on me."

The Bausch & Lomb Championships doubles title is the second win for the Davenport-Raymond team; they won at Indian Wells in early March.

You have to look at their record in doubles this year and it's quite impressive.

They lost first round in Sydney to Kournikova/Rubin but it really was their only major blemish in the year.

They were runner up in Pan Pacific Open and Scottsdale, lost in the semi finals at the Australian Open to the eventual winners (Williams/Williams) and won Indian Wells and Amelia Island.

They would have been a major chance at the Nasdaq-100 but Lindsay got injured.

So I think they deserve to lead the Race to the WTA Doubles Championships at the moment along with Clijsters/Sugiyama Pascal/Suarez and the Williams sisters.
