U.S. Fed Cup Team To Conduct Kids Clinic in Roxbury

U.S. Fed Cup Team To Conduct Kids Clinic in Roxbury

04/21/2003

The United States Fed Cup team will prepare for its first-round Fed Cup tie against the Czech Republic this weekend by conducting a clinic for kids in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

The U.S. Fed Cup team — Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Meghann Shaughnessy, Alexandra Stevenson captain Billie Jean King and assistant coach Zina Garrison — in conjunction with Tenacity, the City of Boston, and USA Tennis New England, will conduct a tennis clinic for more than a thousands youngsters on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center in Roxbury, Mass.

The event will kick off a week of community outreach preceding the team's match against the Czech Republic April 26-27th at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, Mass. U.S. Fed Cup team members will answer questions from and play tennis on four courts with students invited from Tenacity, City of Boston, Sportsmen's Tennis Club, Stillman Tennis Center and Franklin Park in a two-hour clinic, where each attendee will hit with the pros.

"As a team, and as professional athletes, we have a unique opportunity to reach out to young people and have a positive impact on their lives," said King. "We hope that our visit with these kids will excite them about tennis and the fun that it can bring."

The appearance of the American team has generated significant interest in the area. The USTA announced a record sell out of Fed Cup tickets for the first-round tie. It took less than a single working day for the U.S. squad to sell out as tickets went on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 21st and all 5,741 tickets were sold out six hours later, by 4 p.m.

"The community's response to Fed Cup has been overwhelming, with the fastest sell out in U.S. Fed Cup team history," said Arlen Kantarian, Chief Executive, Professional Tennis, USTA. "Giving back to the community is one of the USTA's key goals this week."

As part of the USTA's outreach to local youth during Fed Cup Week, the USTA
also will host a youth clinic in Lowell, Friday, April 25th and supply 1,000 free tickets for area youth to attend the USA vs. Czech Republic Fed Cup
first round.

"This is a watershed event for youth tennis in the city of Boston," said Ned Eames, President and Founder, Tenacity. "By combining the resources of the USTA, the City of Boston, and the local tennis playing community, we are able to provide an event that, like our program itself, should have a positive and profound impact on children's lives."

Tenacity's mission is to help build the character, scholastic skills, and physical development of urban youth through a combination of tennis instruction/competition and academic support with a focus on life-skills through after school and summer programs. In partnership with Boston Centers for Youth & Families, Boston's Public School Department and the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation, Tenacity helps thousands of disadvantaged Boston youth each year, ages seven to 15, to become better students and athletes today and well-rounded individuals, professionals, and citizens in the future.

Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) provides one-stop shopping for families looking for programs and resources for infants to elders through its five core program areas: Preschool Child Care, After-School and Out-Of-School Time, Education, Youth Development and Sports and Fitness. Its goal is to provide education and recreation programs that are both enriching and fun at quality facilities in every Boston neighborhood.

Thanks for this story!

It's great to hear about athletes (tennis players) giving service to children .
