um, come now

Shes very talented, and it looks like she may fulfill her potential because of this entire year (not just this tournament) but a slam was never in her forecast

you cant win a slam with that serve
and heck, even without that serve shes still not as good as the top 5 players

however, she can get to another SF with a good draw

It's possible, but she has just won her first title so I voted no.

Maybe if the draw opens up.

I think, at this point she has a mental stength. But in terms of game - I find it quite unlikely at this point. Note that she was at losing position in two matches at this tournament. It says a lot about her mental strength, but should she have faced players who a mentally stronger than her opponents at this tourney ( such as a Williams, Clijsters or even Capriati ) she would probably lose.

IMO she has the worst serve in the top 30. If she could play like she did today, but serve like Serena then I think she could!

But she doesn't serve like Serena, so I wouldn't count on her chances.

I voted yes.

Elena Dementieva is won powerful player. Her serve is very spotty. She can do a low 90s everynow and again. But hr groundstrokes are out of this world. I mean she can really compare her groundstrokes with Capriati, Davenport, Venus, Serena, etc. And her mental stability is just wonderful. She faced matchpoints and she just kept working at it. I mean there is room for improvement but hopefully a win here will motivate her to become better!

I'm not saying she will be a multiple Slam winner, but if she improves more (which she can), develops her serve and just keeps at it, she is legit Slam material.

She is very talented and has got Slam potential (USO or AO)

But she has to keep progressing forward now, rather than letting this result make her believe that everything is perfect.

There isn't a green clay Slam now is there

(LOL, someone had to say it.)

No, I don't think she'll ever win a Slam. Look at the Slam contenders now. There's really no big weakness in their games (Serena, Venus, Capriati, Henin-Hardenne, Clijsters), certainly not as big of one as Elena's serve. Low 90s every now and again isn't going to cut it against the elite competition that usually comprises the late stages of a Slam.

I think she has the ability to do well in the Slams but I don't think she'll ever win one unless something miraculous happens.

Without the serve, she is not a factor.

Difficult to say she can't beat the top 5 when she has just beaten two of them? If you can beat the World number 4 and 5 and can go through the bottom half of the top 10 to get to them and you can show you can do this more than once you are pretty much a contender for the GS semis. If the Wiliams sisters are not there and you play like today against KIm?
Now if you could fix the serve and serve like you did in the last game .....

I love Alyona... but my opinion is "no". Of course, there's a chance she could... but I highly doubt it.

1) She still has to prove she can play at such a high level for more than 1 week. Alyona hasn't looked nearly this well at any other point in her career.

2) I don't think she has a chance on any other surface, but clay... she needs the time to set up.

3) I think she played her absolute best today... and I still don't think that beats Serena in a GS. I can't see how she'd hold any games versus her.
