I think Monica has been unlucky with injuries in the last few years but even when she was fit she has never really looked like a realistic bet for a Grand Slam win.

all i wanted to say is that, these are monicas golden years, and as the great champions before her, while she competes valiantly, she is but a shadow of her former self.

she has overcome so much, fought through so much pain, yet always emerged a champion.
she forever changed womans tennis, inspiring so many of the current champions

with so much dignity and grace, she will always be remembered for her strength, her compassion, and her longevity.

Through 15 years, she has been in the Top 5 at some point during the year, an accomplishment few can match.

and while her best days are behind her, she will always remain a great, great, champion

actually i just wanted Volcanas input as his opinion on Monica has been up and down the few months, thats all

but anyway

Keep Fighting Monica

Let's see who's won them in the past three years. .. . Venus, Serena, Mary, JenCap, and L. Davenport have won in the past three years. Monica and about a million others didn't win slams.

I know a million others have not won Slams. The thread asked about Monica in the last three years. I am saying she is still a great champion, but she hasn't really looked like getting up to Venus, Serena, Jennifer and Lindsay's level and winning a Grand Slam in the last three years. It is tough for Monica now because if she has a great match against one of the top three or four, another one is waiting in the next round. And the post you deleted about Monica winning 9 Slams, I never questioned the fact she deserved those.

Very nice post. I would emphasize that Monica remains very competitive. And anyone who goes onto the court thinking they're going to have it easy against Monica has another thing coming.

Monica is true class and I'm just happy she's enjoying the sport as much as we enjoy watching her.

Venus and Serena are sitting on top of the WORLD

If I was going to sum up the past three years of Monica in one word the word would be frustration. She still clearly had GS winning ability in 2000 and 2001, but once she was caught in the 'injury-overweight cycle', she couldn't seem to get out of it. Monica won RG three times, but the last couple years, her whole clay season has been wiped out. These days, she's still a threat to anyone outside the top four, but against those four, the overwhelming advantage they have in speed is telling.

But if Monica could stay healthy for six months, my opinion might change.

Proud to be an American
Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

My sentiment exactly.

These injuries have absolutely destroyed any resurrection of Monica's career or her former self as in the early 90s. I love this girl very much, but I doubt she will ever be able to win another GS. Just as Raquel said. Monica can take one of the big hitters out in a match, but another one will be waiting in the next round, and she normally can't handle that.

If this injury persists throughout the rest of this year, I wouldn't be surprised if Monica retires at the end of this year. This nagging foot injury has really taken a lot out of her the last 2 years or so, and it just seems to really frustrate her. It will be a sad day when she does decide to leave.

If the injuries go away, Monica will be around and back in the top 10 for at least 2 more years, otherwise, buh bye Monica.
