Monica won, but stats are a weird story

Stats for match vs. Barna: http://www.blchamps.com/stats/Match323.html

Monica had 48 UE's to Anca's 24, exactly double!

Monica had more winners, but also more double-faults, fewer aces, a worse 2nd-serve percentage, and actually fewer overall points.

She still won, though. 2-6 7-6(5) 6-3

An even more shocker is that Barna actually won more points throughout the match too. It was something like 98-93 in favor of Anca.

Obviously, Monica is shaking off the rust from her layoff.

She'll cut the number of UEs as she continues to play.

Hey! A win is a win!

Monica has been injured and is coming back. It's always tough to come back after an injury because you're super careful not to re-injure yourself again, and that can definitely alter your play and how you strike the ball.

But Anca is no slouch herself! She is streaky, but when she is on a good streak, she can cause some damage.

Congrats to Monica. She'll continue to build confidence and improve. I mean...what a confidence builder when you can win fewer points overall and STILL manage to win the match!!!

Its definitley to be expected that she was a little rough around the edges, it definitley shows what a fighter she is. Again, great win Monica!

Unfortunately, Monica does not have an easy draw. She has only one more match to get herself to Henin's level.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

Look at the brightside: Monica is getting some good practice ahead of RG.

Anca gave another great fight to a top-player
but once again she lost

Something was bound to go right sometime today, All these broken pieces fit together to make a perfect picture of us
It got cold and then dark so suddenly and rained, It rained so hard the two of us were the only thing
That we could see for miles and miles
And in the middle of the flood I felt my worth, When you held onto me like I was your little life raft
Please know that you were mine as well
Drops of water hit the ground like God's own tears
And spread out into shapes like Salad bowls and basins and buckets for bailing out the flood

When was the last time she played? Dubai? Tokyo? Not surprised she was rusty...especially against a crafty player like Barna. Barna has played Serena two or three times...and two of them have gone to three. She knows how to mix it up

Actually, I took a lot of good things away from this match. As the stats indicate, Anca was obviously on her game (34/24 is a solid ratio). She appeared to be serving well, and making few errors.

That said, Monica was obviously going for her shots all the way. 40+winners says as much. The number of UEs while slightly higher than I'd like to see, was not the reason she had to fight. Anca's play was. My biggest concern is Monica's "feast or famine" serving. Hopefully that improves to more "feast".

The bottom line is, happily, that Monica played the big points better than her tenacious opponent. And that's what makes champions.
