Capriati, Kournikova, Rubin Confrim Eastbourne Entry

Capriati, Kournikova confirm Eastbourne entry
2003-04-16 11:48:15 GMT (Reuters)

LONDON, April 16 (Reuters) - Triple grand slam champion Jennifer Capriati has confirmed that she will warm up for this year's Wimbledon championships at the Eastbourne grasscourt event in June.

The world number six said on Wednesday: "I am glad to be coming back to Eastbourne, the fans have always been very supportive there.

"It's a great tournament... I think it is an ideal tune up for Wimbledon."

Event organisers also announced that defending champion Chanda Rubin and Russia's Anna Kournikova will play at Devonshire Park.

Championship director John Feaver said: "(Capriati's) presence at the event will only add to its already high profile.

"Jennifer's success in rebuilding her career and becoming one of the most successful women players in recent years is one of the most amazing stories in the history of tennis."

The tournament takes place from June 16-21.

Well, now Chanda is officially entered. But then, it's not much of a surprise. She's always played Eastbourne and, under WTA rules, as a first-time winner of the event, she's required to defend her title.

Isn't this the event Kournikova beat Graf at?

Sportsnet cancels their tennis coverage...and Capriati signs up in Eastbourne

This year it seems that Jenn is entering alot of tournments that she hasn't played in the past couple of years: Eastborne, Indian Wells, Amelia Island, she was signed up in Japan but pulled out because of her eyes, and I think she is doing an extra one in the summer hardcourt season in the US. I don't care, the more of Jenn the better, but it still seams like she is playing alot more this year.

I think it's the way for Jen to make up the points that she lost in the first GS (OZopen03) of the year.....
