Davenport, Raymond revel in reunion

Davenport, Raymond revel in reunion

AMELIA ISLAND -- When it comes to expected partnerships in the WTA Tour doubles competition, one of the first that comes to mind is Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs.

The most successful team in recent women's professional tennis history, Raymond and Stubbs partnered to win 28 doubles titles dating back to their first championship at Chicago in 1996.

Still, when the pair decided to go their separate ways last summer, Raymond said there were no hard feelings.

"After five years, we kind of just ran our course," Raymond said. "Things just got a little stale. Things like that happen."

It wasn't much of a stretch, then, for Raymond, 29, to call on former partner and best friend Lindsay Davenport, 26, to reprise an on-court relationship that has roots in their earliest days on tour.

"You know, Linds and I started our careers playing together and now we have a chance to play together again," Raymond said. "It's the perfect ending to our story."

That Raymond-Davenport partnership is as rock solid off the court as it was on it in yesterday's 6-1, 6-1 opening round victory against Alexandra Stevenson and Mashona Washington at the Bausch & Lomb Championships at Amelia Island.

"I didn't really think I'd ever play doubles again full-time and commit to a partner," Davenport said. "When last fall she and Rennae decided not to play together anymore, I thought she's probably the only person I'd play with. She's my best friend out here and we've really had a good time."

That camaraderie was more than evident in the casual way the pair talked, heads bent together while they sat on the sideline, as Davenport retied her shoelaces before the start of yesterday's match.

"We talk about the full spectrum of things out there," Raymond said. "We certainly talk about doubles strategy but we also talk about where we want to go for dinner, too. That's part of the reason we have so much fun -- we keep it light."

Still, it's a lot easier to have a good time when you are winning. And Davenport and Raymond are winning. Just like at the beginning of their careers.

The pair captured their first doubles titles together at Indian Wells in 1994 and defended their championship the following year. While Raymond would eventually go on to partner with Stubbs and evolve into a doubles specialist, Davenport's developing career centered around singles play.

That has now come full circle.

The Raymond-Davenport duo is 17-4 this year. They claimed one doubles title, a three-set win at Indian Wells against Kim Clijsters and Ai Sugiyama, and reached the finals in two other tournaments. And if their play against Stevenson and Washington foreshadows what is to follow this week, a second title may not be far away.

"We hit a lot of returns, a lot of first serves and a lot of good volleys and that's the key to good doubles," Raymond said.

And with 68 doubles titles between them, they ought to know.

I wish Lindsay and Corina would play together again. That would be a great pairing too. They are close friends, but that doesn't bind them together for life.

Corina Morariu-get better soon! I miss cheering for you!!

Well, corina has been hurt almost 24/7 since her cancer scare. There hasn't really been any time for her and Lindsay to play.

I'm glad this partnership is working out well for Lindsay. She needs to get back to having fun with tennis, and it sounds like that's exactly what her and Lisa are doing.

Thanks for sharing the article with us. I think its great Lindsay and lisa are playing doubles together. Lindsay is having fun and this can only help her singles game (she won 6-1, 6-0 agaisnt Nicole last night!).

I also would like to see her play again with Corina but because of Corina's illness/health perhaps it may not happen. But that would be great.

Go Lindsay/Lisa and Corina

thank you for the lovely story! i love reading about tour friendships. raymond and davenport are smart to reteam because they were a formidable pair the first time they played together years ago. i think as well that davenport's wise to cut back on her doubles because she's feeling her way back on the tour post surgery.

tennisIlove09, thanks for this great article!

Lisa, Lindsay and Corina are all great friends. It would be fun -- okay, I would be ecstatic! -- to see Lindsay play with Corina again, but I like this combo, too.

68 doubles titles between them
