Patty Schnyder, Drama Queen

I knew about the orange juice dude...but

From Weirtheim's mailbag:

In late 1998, when she cracked the top 10 as a teenager and her career was on the upswing, someone described Schnyder to me as a "the female Rios." Both left-handed; similar clever, artistic game; similar temperament; and, it turned out, a similar career trajectory. Schnyder has never been the same player since she hooked up with that self-styled "guru," Rainer Harnecker, in early 1999. From there the story took even weirder turns. It seems that Schnyder's parents hired one Rainer Hofmann as a private investigator to help extricate Schnyder from Harnecker's clutches. He did. So much so that he and Schnyder subsequently fell in love and became engaged. Hofmann traveled with Schnyder, sometimes served as her coach and was a fixture on the WTA Tour.

Hofmann, however, recently was found guilty of defrauding a German telecommunications company of $1.3 million and was sentenced by a Frankfurt judge to 18 months in jail. (His lawyer told the German media that he pleaded guilty to spare Schnyder the embarrassment of a trial.) Recent reports also suggested that Schnyder's estranged parents were launching a defamation action against Hofmann. I'm not sure whether Hofmann has begun his sentence, etc., but it's easy to see how this could all be a bit, um, distracting to Schnyder.

John must be reading this board if he's writing that now! COz there was discussion about this in like January! It's old news, and how does it make Patty a drama queen? She's not been going around having fits and tantrums for the media, etc... that is more of a drama queen! This just means that Patty makes bad decisions!

And I'd beg to differe with John about Patty not getting back her old level of play. She's been sitting at #13 in the rankings for some time now, and her highest ever ranking was #8. When she got into the top 10, the Williams sisters were nowhere to be seen, so #13 is very respectable!

You know, Jon should pay a little more attention. Patty did fall off the track for a while after 1998, but last year she made it all the way back to #13 while winning Zurich and getting to the finals of charleston. In my eyes, she had an even better year in 2002 than she did in 1998.

But her personal life has always been a huge mess. Jut a question for whoever can answer it .... is Patty very famous in Switzerland?

I think because of her early loss at FCC, she's dropped back to #21.

But can you imagine what career she *could* be having if she had normal people in her life...

Well, duh. The Swiss hate Hingis.

Patty hasn't fallen anywhere yet. Her Charleston points are off this week. If she falters again, goodbye ranking. But not just yet.

Why would Patty need a "special investigator" to get away from a man?

That's just some fucked up shit...

She won't lose her Charleston points until next week.

From what I understand Harnecker was like a cult leader...After she took up with him, she dropped her then-boyfriend and stopped communicating with her parents. Of course they must have been in anguish over this.

Not only did she drop ties with her loved ones, but she was dieting on nothing but orange juice, as per his order (some type of special training diet ).

Damn...

Well, here's a valuable lesson for all other females... that I learned a long time ago. All men are scum. Never take relationships seriously with them... but take everything else.
