Kournikova Receives Wild Card Into German Open

Kournikova Receives Wild Card Into German Open

By Tennis Week
04/14/2003

Anna Kournikova's results have been underwhelming, but her drawing power remains undiminished. The 67th- ranked Russian was award a wild card into the German Open, which is scheduled for May 5-11th in Berlin.

The 21-year-old Kournikova has been slowed by a back injury and a series of first-round losses this season. A sprained back forced her to withdraw from Tokyo, Memphis and Indian Wells. Since her return to the WTA Tour, she's suffered first-round setbacks in three consecutive events at Miami, Sarasota and Charleston.

Justine Henin-Hardenne defeated Serena Williams, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6(5) to capture the 2002 German Open title. Henin-Hardenne handed Williams her first loss of the season to snap Williams' 21-match winning streak and win the Family Circle Cup championship.

Both Williams and Henin-Hardenne are expected to compete at the German Open next month.

I'm flabbergasted, stupefied, dumbstruck - and seriously out of breath. Who would have guessed?

Is a wild card into a tournament requested or is it offered by the tournament?? If it is offered can a player decline it??. Is there a limit to how many wild card a player can recieve when returning from injury?? Why don't players protest against Anna (or the tournament officials)recieving so many wild cards when other players who really deserve it don't get them??

Why, there is nothing they can do about it, except silently seethe, like this:

Of course, they can then take this burning rage and direct it toward beating the crap out of her when they face her on court.

Honestly SR, I think that you are out to jinx Anna.

Anyway, I have no problem with Anna getting wildcards into tournaments. I look at it this way. If I were a player who was struggling to get back into form and wildcards came my way, I would take them. I know that I have said in the past that playing qualifying would help her, but I do not feel that way anymore.

I wonder if Anna is still going to play that challenger next week. Surely that injury should be healed by then?

she's "still" gold exempt, so it's perfectly legitimate to give her endless wild cards.

those who are affected by this are somewhat powerless to protest.

those who are not affected (the top girls) don't care. besides they may draw anna early, therefore getting an easy ticket through to the next round.

I wonder what benchmark they are using to determine that she is still a draw? I think when she plays she draws a crowd, but I think most of those people would be there anyway...they would be watching someone else if she wasnt there...

its sad...because all anna has become is a sideshow...lets make sure we get to her first match because it will most likely be the only one

How did Anna get to this point..it all seems so sad!

Tournaments need to make money. Anna Kournikova draws the casual spectator to a tournament and earns the tournament more money in ticket sales, that's why she gets the WC's. The hardcore tennis fans will be there anyway. Anna means more people will be through the doors in the early stages than if the wild card was given to someone of a similar rank.

This situation with Anna is really pathetic . I was excited to see her play when she just came on the scene. But as the years rolled by and I saw her steady decline, I stopped taking her as a serious tennis player. This endless number wildcards she is getting is not doing her any good .

I am sure it is true that Anna still draws additional fans to a tournament.

But for how long? I doubt that even now the lure is as strong as it was a couple of years ago. No one goes expecting to see fantastic tennis from her any longer, but they still want to gawk at A Celebrity. But I don't think celebrity will be enough on its own to draw a crowd forever. She needs to get the tennis working, as well, to keep the fans streaming in.

whoopee dingshit. They better put her first round match on center court because she'll quickly be gone-gone.
