What player made the most of their abilities in their career?

Without a doubt I'd say it would have to be Arantxa Sanchez Vicario who if anything totally overachieved in her career. I liked her but was never a massive fan but for her to end up with 4 grand slam singles titles, countless tour titles in singles & doubles as well as a stint at #1 is amazing when you consider that she had no obvious weapons and was competing in a time of great power hitters herself such as Graf & Seles as well as more seemingly to the eye "talented" tennis players such as Sabatini and Novotna. I'd say if anyone could retire with no regrets it would be Arantxa.

David, wash your mouth out!!

Arantxa had lots of weapons, they were just unconventional. I dont mean biological or chemical weapons, I mean her tenacity and consistency. Circa 1994 those were as intimidating for opponents as Steffi's forehand. And her net talents were better than most (#1 doubles player on several occasions), we just didnt see them very often. Its hard to be 5'6" and spend much time at the net in singles, no matter how good you are.

I agree that she made the most of her abilities though, and was the one of the hardest working players on tour, which is in my opinion what enabled her to step up a level from Pierce, Huber, Coetzer, Date, Tauziat, Fernandez et al

anna kournikova
mirjana lucic

honestly, i'd have to say iva majoli. she is a grand slam winner and for someone who has less talent than alot of the other players that is pretty damn good...

not steffi since her body fell apart at 20 since she refused to go the gym at 17 and she was warned by lendl but steffi was only caring about her legs wich were thin anyway! (in comparing too some players)

if steffi had gone to the gym she might not have been injured so often!

Oh, I agree that her tenacity and "running" were great facets in her game Jon, and she would have been a nightmare to play against when in stubborn mood. I hate playing retrievers myself, they drive me mad, but there were enough big hitters around that would have been expected to hit through Arantxa every time.

In terms of ranking either Tauziat or Coetzer being world number 3 is just too

Nancy Loeffler-Caro... she gets paid for playing worse than a 5 year old.

LOL@ JonBcn...."no chemical weapons" Maybe ASV had no "weapons of mass destruction" but she sure did know how to use the Spanish clay clay run and sweat torture on opponents!

God bless Sanchez for stealing 1994 from the clutches of Steffi Graf.
As long as she wasn't up against fellow Spanaird Martinez I liked watching Aranxta. Besides her feistiness (remember how she reacted when she thought Serena tried to hit her and Jana dumped on her game?) and gamesmanship were entertaining by themselves.

And did anyone EVER see Sanchez tank a match? I never did, and how many women can that be said of?

As for Majoli-to me she's gotten little to nothing out of her huge talent.
Iva has loads of talent and simply stopped working hard after her 1997 French win.

Great thread Mirjana

Well this topic made me smile. It just has to be Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario..I mean out of the 11 players who reached that World #1 ranking she was the only one who had a defensive style game in an offensive style tennis world. lol But it was more then just playing defense that made her reach the top..and that was her courageous heart in which she fights for every point, her hard work in which you don't just need talent to win but a tremendous work ethic, and you know just the attitude that you CAN be a grand slam winner with any type of style game you have. And it's true she never had a main shot weapon, her serve and especially her forehand always let her down but she was always consistent on that backhand of hers, her netplay wasn't so bad, and had one of the best overheads in the game. But to me it's still amazing how much she acheived and having reached every goal that she has made..although a Wimbledon or Australian Open title would have been nice.

So even though she was never a "media" type and possibly won't be remembered for most of her accomplishments, the records are there and speak for themselves.

ARANTXA SANCHEZ-VICARIO...Tennis legend in body and heart!

1989, 1994, 1998 French Open Champion, 1994 U.S. Open Champion
1994, 1995 Australian Open Finalist, 1995, 1996 Wimbledon Finalist
4- Time Olympic Medalist, 5-Time Fed Cup Winning Team, Inducted into Hall of Fame in 2007!!!

Yep definitely Arantxa.

4 Slams, doubles Slams, Fed Cup, No. 1 in singles and dubs....

She really made use of every ounce of talent.

Her speed was amazing, she got to shots that no other woman could get to AND placed them extremely well to frustrate opponents.

Her BH was one of the best, as well as her dropshots and overheads.

She really made the best of it. Now I can think of some girls, who if they had the determination like Arantxa to make use of their talent (Kournikova, Dementieva, Hingis) could easily make huge ground in the game.
