Richard Williams Vows to Bring Back 'Signs'

Sign Up: Richard Williams Vows To Bring Back His Signs

By Richard Pagliaro
04/10/2003

Richard Williams helped script a storybook rise to tennis stardom for Serena and Venus Williams that saw his daughters climb from the cracked public courts of Compton, California to the peak of their profession as the top two ranked women in the world.

Now, Mr. Williams is ready to resume his writing career ó by bringing back the signs he formerly flashed during his daughters' triumphs at Wimbledon and in other major matches. The human headline maker became his own story-board writer when he unveiled his sign: "It's Venus' Party and No One's Invited" to celebrate Venus' victory at the 2000 Wimbledon.

You don't need to read between the lines to understand Mr. Williams' motivation to bring back his signs. The man who has dabbled in tournament photography and hits an impressive one-handed backhand said he's returning to writing signs out of a desire to inspire fans and add excitement to tournaments.

"It's inspirational to fans, and I actually think it helps the tournament," Mr. Williams told the Miami Herald. "Tennis needs a lot of help. Clap your hands, tap your feet, blow your horns. Tennis needs something other than 'shhhhhhhhh!' "

Let the controversy begin...

Richard Williams intrigues me. Do you think these changes will act to benefit tennis OR act as a self-promotional tool for Richard?

Questions to ponder...
