Question Why Monica needs to win 5 matches to take the Shanghai Title?

I noticed that for a Tier II, as the four top seeeds, you only need to win 4 matches to win the title. Why Monica needs to win 5 matches as a top seed and also in a Tier IV?

This particular tournament has a draw of 32, no byes. I think it's the only one in the whole year like that.

You have to answer for Santino, Carlo.

This is the first time China holds a WTA event. Organizers hope local players as many as possible can play here. Meanwhile they did not want to affect the chances of other foreign players. This is why 4 byes are replaced by 4 active players. This is rare indeed.

Well, I thought that it has always been the case with Tier IV 32 draw tournaments - no buys. Tier III 32 draw had two buys, Tier I and II had 4 buys.

All Tier IV and V draws have 32 players and no byes

Tier III 30 draws with 2 byes except Birmingham which is 56 draw with top 8 getting byes.

All tourns shouldn't have byes , if winning is a success then you will just have to live with it.

Qualifiers have a much harder time <IMG SRC="smilies/mad.gif" border="0">

Yeah qualifing is hard but it gives you the much needed match play cause if you have to play qualifiers it probably means you don't have much experience anyway. And that is why wildcards are so useful!

And byes are useful and needed because the top players are the ones who reach the later rounds, so they play more matches than the other players usually, so the byes give them time to recover from the previous tournaments if any, the jet lag, and reduces the number of matches they have to play, thereby reducing a chance of an injury!null
