too much modelling

For your information she gave up that a long time ago

Check your facts before posting something.

She lost her 7th match in a row, is that bad? Yes Can she turn it around? I don't know.

Maybe give her a little more time with her new coach.

Yes, it's very sad!

She's really a great girl, but I think it will be more and more difficult for her to win. First, I think she hasn't confidence anymore and if you don't win a match in months you will become very dissapointment.

Her ranking is sinking very hard now, for the big tournaments she has to play quallies now and about a few weeks, maybe for the smaller tournaments too. So it will become more and more difficult for her.

But I think it's great that she don't give up, she goes through. I really hope that she can reach the quarters or something next week. That will lift up her confidence and maybe she'll start winning matches again!

I did remember reading an article early in the year, where Babsi stated that too much modelling had caused problems for her tennis. Whatever the problem may be, Barbara needs to figure out what it is and address it ASAP. She is too talented to lose matches like this.

It really all comes down to pressure and being able to handle the positive and negative aspects of it. Some players can handle it (Venus, Serena, Jennifer, Kim, Justine) and some players cannot (Martina, Anna, Jelena, Elena). I think by modelling, perhaps Barbara felt the pressure intensify to prove herself on the court. Given the fact that Barbara is not an aggressive player anyway, this pressure just causes more problems. Somewhere Babsi needs to look back at her best year on the tour (1999) and see how she got to that form.

Here is a post from my messageboard, not by me:

I am not a tennis coach, I don't even play, I only know what I learned through watching many matches.

And I have watched Babsi a few times, both in practice and matches. What I know about her is:

1) She has a very good serve, it's powerful and she places it well.

2) she has very good groundstrokes, powerful and well placed.

3) She moves well on court

4) She is fit

5) She handles power very well, I've seen her returning Serena's shot with no problems.

6) She has decent volleys and good variety, can hit a slice backhand when needed, or a dropshot.

Now, what's her problem? he is clearly not playing at to her potential, we have only seen glimpses of her real potential in the last couple of years (like Montreal last year).

Well, I saw her losing to Myriam Casanova and I noticed a few things.

1) She is too impatient and emotional on court. When things don't go her way she gets very upset and that obviously affects her game. If she misses an easy shot for example, she gets upset and will probably miss the next 3 or 4 points. Every player has easy misses in a match and they just regroup and play the next point.

2) confidence, obviously it's low and it obviously affects her game negatively. I understand it's very difficult to be confident when the results are not coming but she needs to focus on herself, she knows better than anyone what her level, strenghts and weaknesses are, and she knows she is better than many of the player that have beaten her.

3) The most important point, shot selection - game tactic/strategy. This is the point where Babsi is IMO very bad, she reminds me a little bit of Anna in that respect. For example against Casanova, I saw a lot of points where Babsi built up the point beautifully, got a short ball and she only needed to put it away; Casanova was standing on one side of the court and instead of hitting a safe ball to the other side (especially considering Casanova's lack of mobility) she hit the ball to where Casanova was standing. Of course, to win the point that way she needed to hit a fantastic shot, result, either the ball came back or she missed it and lost a point she should have won. That happened many times in the match, different circumnstances but same pattern, poor shot selection.

She needs to work on that, confidence and mental strenght will come when she does start winning, but to win she needs to take advantage of the winning positions. She needs to play safer, she is hit the ball away from her opponents, she doesn't need to paint the lines.

She needs to adapt her game to the opponent. If she faces Casanova, with bad mobility, she needs to try to move her around, that's a very bad tactic against Serena, or Justine who are very fast. She needs to have an strategy before the match starts.

She is still young and has no physical problems, stays relatively injury free and has a few year ahead. She also works hard, but I think she needs to work smarter and the results will come.

Sounds like her mind is not totally on the tennis court. Two straight losses to Molik after winning the first set. But I am sure if Barbara still has her heart into the game she will be back.

Please give me the link of that article that she said that modelling affected her game because I think I have read nearly every article on her this year and there has only been 4 and she has never mentioned it, she made a hint of it in this article which was from the beginning of last year:

Sorry, I can't give you a link. It was an article that was c/p'd onto this messageboard. I do remember Babsi saying that she regretted taking up modelling as a side gig and that she really regretted the deal she made with the Daily Mirror.

Modelling aside, I think what that observer posted on your messageboard was absolutely right. Babsi has the talent, but she is going to have to learn to control her anxiety, so she can think her way through a match. Perhaps watching old matches, like her victory over Venus at RG 01, will help.

she's 27 now .... not exactly young for women's tennis.

she was never really known as one of the hardest workers, was she?

Barbara is a mental case at times.... that is certainly so...

Anyway, she should pull it together at some point, but I think she's on the downside of her career. The positive news is that she has been no worse than a top 40 player every year 1996-2002, which tells me that she should be able to recover from this ugly start at least somewhat.
