I mean: in "SharApova" the stress is on the letter "a" (not on "o"). That's why all constructions with "Pova" sound ugly in Russian -)

and how is it with Vera? She's Звонарёва, so she should be Zvonaryova or something like that

Yes. You are totally right But it's not so annoying mistake because it has an excuse - In Russian you can write E instead of Ё

She is to blame. She could have corrected it.

Serena is untouchable.!!! Halep is getting there.

If they were doing an article featuring a bunch of players I wouldn't blame them for an occasional slip-up. But this was an article just about Simona.

Edit: Actually I just realised it isn't Okay, maybe it isn't such a big deal

It would have been a waste of time... western journalist do not listen to any player who is not in the top 10.

On place where they can make effective inroad is with the chair umpires or the people who make the on-court introduction of the players.
If they can convince these people to make a concerted effort to pronounce players name close to their native tongue pronunciation, it would be a good start.

the correct pronunciation: it's Sha-RAP-ova, not Shara-POE-va

And there's many other such threads.

Re: ESPN Women´s Awards: MIP Simone Halep

Thank but that is not what I am talking about.

What I am talking about is the public arena... like what pronunciation commentators, announcers and umpires use during the telecast.
It is this pronunciation that stays with non-native speakers of the language, the links you provided are useful for personal knowledge but will not help in this instance.

As for Sharapova pronunciation, there is one umpire ( I can't recall her name) who tries to pronounce it the right way, i.e. per the phonetic you provided, but she is the only one.

Re: ESPN Women´s Awards: MIP Simone Halep

Maybe people could focus on this special notice given to Simona Halep as a tennis player as opposed to detailing spelling and pronunciation failings that have nothing to do with Simona's achievement. Maybe, please, maybe?

It would be nice if they spelled her name correctly and get her height right, but at least they are recognizing that she had a phenomenal year. Sometimes players from smaller countries get less notice.

Considering that she has changed her coach again, I don't expect her to continue her hot streak. However, I expect her to get a little further at AO.

Re: ESPN Women´s Awards: MIP Simone Halep

Enough talk about Halep.
Let's see what she has in reserve for all her new fans in Sydney in a couple of weeks.

Serena is untouchable.!!! Halep is getting there.

No, no excuses for ESPN. It's not even like Simona is totally unheard of as a name in English speaking countries. Here in the UK I went to school with a Simona and I'm sure there must be some Simonas in the US too. Granted it's not a common name in the US but it's a schoolboy/girl mistake by ESPN.

Simona Halep, Princess of Hearts
