Does Pova have a skill block or a mental block vs Serena?

Just read some interesting posts on this subject in another thread and i believe this deserves a poll. I believe Maria has a skillblock against Serena (like 99% of the tour). It's obvious to me that shes just not fast enough to handle her. Serena simply does everything (serve, return, variety, better winners/UE ratio) better which is the reason why she beats her all the time.

Pova is still dominant against the rest of the field because shes a weaker version of Serena. The fact that she loses to Vika often also proves its not a mental thing, cause Vika has become too good skill-wise to the point that shes able to beat Serena. Or does Serena have a mental block against Vika??

Lmao Pova fans crack me up. There is no skill block Maria had enough skill to beat Serena. Serena knows this which is why she uses first strike tennis against Maria so that Maria cannot play her game.

Good example of players who dont have a skill block against Serena are Kuzzie and JJ (mostly on clay) and Vika on HC, but they still lose. Why? Are they mentally too weak or is Serena too strong mentally? Or is it more about skill? Luck? A combination of all these things?

Re: Does Pova have a skill block or a mental block vs Serena?

Both. Serena is superior in every category. She serves better, hits the ball better, movement isn't even a discussion, defense isn't a discussion, and tactics aren't even close to a discussion. When it comes to the mental part, I have a very strong opinion about this. I've said this many times before. Serena LOVES to beat Sharapova. So many people wanted this to be a rivalry, for Sharapova to be the one to "dethrone" Serena, that it's almost like Serena uses that as fuel when they play. She isn't just beating Sharapova, but beating the idea that she's competition, that they're on the same level, and that it's a rivalry. Serena might not ever lose to Sharapova again.

Its mostly skill, but Pova has lost so many times in a row now the mental aspect is getting worse and worse too. So its a combination.

Twenty-one slams.

Both.

Serena is the best skill-wise, and the toughest (or at least Top 3) mentally too. So...

Isn't there already a thread called "Why is Serena better than everyone else?"

Or do Serena fans just love talking about Maria that much?

Re: Does Pova have a skill block or a mental block vs Serena?

Neither.
Here is my take
  1. Maria sharpest offensive skills are simply not enough to trouble Serena's sharpest defense
  2. Maria's sharpest defensive skills are not enough to trouble Serena's ordinary offense.
  3. 1 and 2 above mess up her mental game. A mental game is just a bluff if your can't put together a credible comeback or maintain a lead when challenged by the opponent.
It is in Serena vs Maria matches that you can clearly see how much Serena has developed her game in several aspects.

Variety of shots, decision making, patience, shot selection are now more guided more by percentage.
You can also tell by her comfort level and demeanor that she can go up 1 or 2 more gears if necessary.

You just described 'skill block' and I agree with you. She just doesnt have the skills to beat Serena when shes playing well. Players like Vika and JJ have got that little extra that is needed when they are at their best.

Mental block

MIRJANA LUCIC-BARONI ☢ | SAM STOSUR ☯ | MARTINA HINGIS ♚ | DANIELA HANTUCHOVA ✯ | MADISON KEYS ☢ | OLGA PUCHKOVA ❤

Don’t squander the gold of your days listening to the tedious, trying to improve the hopeless failure, or giving away your life to the ignorant and the vulgar. These are the sickly aims, the false ideals of our age.

I think JJ has a massive mental block against Sharapova, same with Dementieva. Both players lived and died in matches against Serena (a bit like Jennifer Capriati) and would flounder like kicked pups against Maria (Elena especially). It was like watching two entirely different players in her case.

Well at her best I'd pick JJ over Pova. Maria is the better attacker, but JJ is the better defender and when her attacking is ON (2008) shes not as one dimensional as Maria which makes her more skilled imho.. Same goes for Kuznetsova.
