Serena because she was never dominated by a player like Nadal was in 2011.

Nadal.

I'm a Federer fan so naturally you'd expect me to pick Serena (and I prefer her as a player), but even I can't ignore Nadal's mental toughness.

Who didn't Novak dominate in that year?

Nadal. He was never mentally unstable, crying on court. And he is always capable of turning a match around, even though I don't like him, he deserves the vote here.

Re: Serena W. vs. R. Nadal | Battle of mental strengths

They are both strong in their respective tours. Serena is on the female tour (WTA), Rafa the male (ATP), so why do keep comparing anything Serena does to the ATP, when there are plenty of her peers we can do this with?

I'm just sayin, Why is there always a comparison made re Serena and some ATP player and not her female peers? That would be a more accurate comparison IMO.

The mods just closed a thread comparing Fed's arrogance to Serena, and this is the same type of thread to me, only worded differently. It will result in the same mess.

Give it a rest sometimes, it gets old.

this is the best and most leveled man-woman comparison......we cannot compare physical strengths or athleticism but mental strength is something which can be compared......there is no flaw in it......

Nadal, I mean Serena is talented and he isn't.

Re: Serena W. vs. R. Nadal | Battle of mental strengths

serena is talented but the most scary part for her opponents is that she actually believes that she cannot be defeated by anyone.....it shows in her face quite clearly wherever she steps out.....

nadal is different.....he does not always believe that he cannot be beaten on the court but what makes him great is his modesty and student like approach towards his profession......that enables him to keep on thinking and keep on fighting without even switching off for a second.....his us open final third set in 2011 was the greatest show of mental strength of the last 10 years at least and his us open final third set recently this year just topped it.....

Re: Serena W. vs. R. Nadal | Battle of mental strengths

Serena wouldn't be so mentally tough if Rafa was on the other side of the court. She'd get that ass turned inside out.

it doesn't make him great, doubting his own greatness is weak. also he is not really modest. it's fake, but everybody knows that already

I'm a big fan of Nadal, but... I don't get this mental toughness that everyone keeps indetifying in him. Really, it's such an exaggeration and every just goes with it, for some reason. It's always puzzled me.

This. Serena is hot and cold, while Nadal is consistent. Anyway, sometimes Serena is super scary when she is losing a match and she can hit ridiculous shots at important moments

he plays with his wrong hand and not as talented as he would be with his natural hand.....so he is bound to lose his rhythm very frequently which is the reason why he doubts himself.....his true greatness lies in overcoming that doubt and fighting which he does so often in his career.....

serena's unreal belief flows from the fact that she hasn't messed with her hands and stuck to her natural hand.....she knows she has everything covered and under control on the tennis court and hence cannot be beaten.....
