So it's not like we were glued to the TV every week rooting for her and suffering when she lost.

Had I have known at the time then I like to think I'd have sympathised and still rooted for her.

It's sad that a young player of such wonderful talent had to struggle with these issues. These days the WTA gives a lot more support to young players, including training in how to handle the media and mentoring from ex players. That can only be a good thing.
Agree. And it's since we all now can access hundreds of TV channels, DVDs and the Internet, and we have more so called celebrities than M&Ms, that it is actually now very difficult for a tennis player to ever be the sort of household name with the accompanying pressure that the players were and had of that era.

That's not what she said in the interview, it is completely out of context.

Tbh I only admire her more for making this statement. It can't have been easy, especially knowing that many people will be only too happy to crucify her for it. But for such a huge star to make such an astonishing confession can only be a boost for any shy young player struggling to deal with all the media attention follwing a big win.

A good lesson for us as tennis fans as well I think. It helps remind us that even the biggest stars are only human, and suffer from the same anxieties and insecurities that all the rest of us do, only they have to deal with that with about a million paparazzi breathing down their necks.

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

I don't care what her excuse is. Throwing away matches of ANY sort is totally unsportsmanlike (or unsportswomanlike) and just showed that she's a weak bitch.

Tennis players like to blame losses on anything other than yourself. She needs to get a grip. I am furious at this comment and I am not even a fan of hers. I can't imagine what some of her fans are thinking right now

It certainly explains all those losses to Graf.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Add in the belief that she is lesbian, I am sure the attention was uncomfortable. But if you can't stand the heat, then why be in the mix. This is pretty lame.
I believe she lost a lot of those matches because she was just not mentally strong.

Some are called to be Great Champions and others are very good, good and decent players. To achieve greatness, you have to embrace and accept the entire package.

Precisely! I wonder who in their right mind, now wants to claim that someone with such mentality was a better competitor for Graf than Pova & Vika for Serena.

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the SILENCE OF OUR FRIENDS. MLK

I call bullshit on this.

I would not be happy if I were her fan then. She self-sabotaged

I wonder what posters who were her fan then now think about this statement.
Generally if your a fan of someone, you are familiar with their personality which is a big part of what you might like about them. I certainly can believe she threw matches because she was uneasy being in the spotlight. Vaidisova is another player that seemed to have a similar level of "shyness". She looked truly uncomfortable in a lot of interviews.
