INDIAN WELLS -- Nine years after winning their first tournament title here, Lindsay Davenport and Lisa Raymond captured the 2003 Pacific Life Open doubles championship Sunday by defeating Kim Clijsters and Ai Sugiyama 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

The doubles title was Davenport’s sixth (and first since 2000) at Indian Wells, and eighth title overall here.

"It’s so funny, in 1994 when we won for the first time, we were so young and it was such a huge deal," Davenport said. "We never expected to win. We even had our flights booked early. So it’s really great for us to win today."

As for the defending 2002 champion Raymond, the victory marked her fourth title.

"It’s great to have started our careers together, and hopefully we can end them playing together," Raymond said.

For Davenport, the match started less then two hours after a frustrating 6-4, 7-5 loss to Clijsters for the singles title.

Davenport and Raymond struggled in the first set, but managed to put it together midway through the second. Down 2-0 they stormed back, losing only two games the rest of the way and eventually winning the set 6-4.

"We hung in there until we were able to turn the tide in the second set," Davenport said.
