Clijsters Downs Davenport To Claim Indian Wells Crown

Clijsters Downs Davenport To Claim Indian Wells Crown

By Richard Pagliaro

Kim Clijsters gave Lindsay Davenport the runaround today. Showing her superior speed by running down Davenport's deep drives, Clijsters captured the Pacific Life Open crown with a 6-4, 7-5 victory in Indian Wells.

"Against every top player you have to move well and try to make that extra ball," Clijsters said. "She missed a few easy shots on those points where I got a break back. Those are very important points to change a sets around, I think."

It was the second tournament title of the year for the third-ranked Clijsters, who raised her record to 21-3 on the season. The 19-year-old Belgian, who was playing in her third straight final, took advantage of 10 Davenport double faults and broke serve five times in the match.

Desire made a difference for Clijsters.

"Against Lindsay it's important to show that you're fighting and that you're trying to get to every ball, showing that your're really hungry to play," Clijsters said. "I think I did that really well. I could tell that her body language was not that great, wasn't as good as when she played Jennifer. So I knew that I had to just keep pushing and try to make her make those unforced errors."

The fourth-seeded Davenport remains one of the best ball-strikers in women's tennis, but her accuracy diminishes when she's forced to hit on the run. Clijsters' court coverage is a key component of her game, and she effectively exploited Davenport's mobility by forcing her to hit low shots while on the run.
"There's no question she's the reason why I didn't play great," Davenport said. "I mean she hits the ball with different spins, some hard, some soft, very consistent. She moves the ball around the court very well (and) can hit the ball pretty much every spot. She's very athletic and gets a lot of balls back."
