The only reason to do it in China is greed. Other than that, it's utterly unecessary..

Re: Should there be a 5th Slam?

I think its needed, to bring competition to the current majors.
I dont believe tennis tradition is big. Pancho Gonzales was robbed of his legacy by ITF.
Winning majors used to mean you were ducking the best competition.

I just want this new major to be big and well run for fans and rank and file players. Pay the players every round, and get every match streamed

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!
HEALTH and HAPPINESS to EVERYONE

Hell to the No No! 4 is more than enough and a 5th slam would always the runt of the litter.

The woods are hopeless. Don't waste your time, they will be destroyed. So will the marsh. It is a losing game mankind has played for more than a century. Sadness is what you are, do not deny it. The universe is a lonely place, a painful place. This is what we can share between us, period.

Should one change--carpet, tile, indoor clay, HarTru...?
No, they just need to fix court homogenisation. Plexiclay is a very slow hardcourt. DecoTurf used to be a quite fast hardcourt, but they have slowed it down in recent years.

Speed up the USO and Wimbledon to early '00s speed and you will have 4 very different surfaces. Add YEC as an indoor event (something quick like carpet) and there is a lot of diversity among the major events.

Currently the biggest problem with the tour surfaces though is that there is too much clay and slow hardcourts, and not enough grass.

This!

Grass should be at least 3-4 weeks BEFORE Wimbledon. It makes NO sense to have grass events (save the HOF tournament, which should be a combined event.....or something akin to Hopman Cup, because of the history and nostalgia) after Wimbledon and clay events after the French.

The 4 major surfaces should be distinct. There should be an indoor leg of the season, and the YEC should rotate across the surfaces every year.

Career Grand Slam in your 20s? Been there done that. Career golden slam your 30s?
There's only 1.

No. Speed up Wimbledon back to real grass would be enough.

Yup. Grass season needs to be longer.

Re: Should there be a 5th Slam?

No.

Actually, 4 Slams are probably too many; only 3 majors would decrease the chances of having unworthy winners even further and would make winning a Slam even more of a big deal than it is now. Adding further Slams would dilute and debase the meaning of winning one, and as many people already have or will point out, you can't create history and a tradition (which is what the Slams are all about) from scratch or by decree.

Cycling has only 3 major 3-week races (Giro/Tour/Vuelta) among all the smaller, shorther competitions, and it works fine for them, even though it's quite unusual for any cyclist to win more than a major in each season.

Re: Should there be a 5th Slam?

If a tournament is changed to a slam, would that then make all previous winners grand slam winners?

If so, Make Rome a slam
